Despite what everyone posts online and all the images you see on social media, just about everyone has some degree of body image issues. Most people can think of at least one thing they’d like to change about their appearance. This can cause overall confidence issues that damage your self-esteem, so let’s fix it!

When it comes to building up your confidence, you don’t actually need to change a single thing about your appearance to get on the right track for self-acceptance. Its all about body confidence and learning to love what makes you special. Here are a few steps and strategies that you can use to tackle those confidence issues when they come up day-to-day.

Find More Reasons To Smile

Far too many people regularly hide their happiness and enjoyment of life. This is often because they’re embarrassed about how their smile looks. As many as 74% of adults worry that an unattractive smile can hurt them professionally, according to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey. Next time you catch yourself covering your mouth when you smile or trying to keep yourself from smiling, make a conscious effort to let your smile shine. Over time, you’ll build up confidence and find more things to smile about.

Try Something New

Sometimes, body image issues come from feeling like you’re stuck in a rut. Don’t be afraid to shake it up by trying something new and fun with your appearance. Focus on the parts of your body you’re less confident about and mix it up! Been feeling down about your hair lately? Try a new style, or dye it a fun, bright color. On average, people will shed 50 to 100 hairs a day, and hair will always grow back if you end up not liking the result. The more you can lean into the areas you’re insecure of, the more you’ll be able to eventually embrace them. This is the key to gaining body confidence.

Dress For Your Own Success

Clothing can be a double-edged sword when it comes to body-image. You either find an outfit that you love and makes you feel amazing, or you end up with an outfit that makes you even more self-conscious. Try to only buy pieces that you feel good about, rather than pieces that you think you “should” own.

Additionally, get your clothing tailored if possible. Most sizes of clothing won’t fit anyone perfectly right off the rack. This is because clothes are designed to fit an “average” that doesn’t really exist. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are an estimated 7,880 tailors, dressmakers, and custom sewers across the nation. This means there’s bound to be one near you that can help you get the clothes you love custom-fit to your body.

Improve Health, Both Mind And Body

Physical health can play heavily into body confidence issues, particularly if you’re feeling like you’re not taking care of yourself. Everyone’s needs will be different. Try to identify at least one way in which you can actively lead a healthier life. For example, if you and your friends regularly go out to bars as a social event, consider cutting back on drinking in favor of other get-togethers. Drinking culture can be hard to get away from, especially in certain areas. There are over 180 breweries and brewpubs throughout the state of Colorado alone. Taking steps to live in a healthier way for both your mind and body isn’t easy, but it’s always worth it.

You’re Not Alone

Ultimately, when you’re working on improving your body confidence, it’s essential to remember that you’re not alone. Everyone struggles in some way with self-esteem, and many of these issues can be traced back to body-based insecurity. Talk to trusted friends and family about what you’re going through. Don’t be afraid to ask for support or encouragement as well. Most importantly, remember that you don’t need to change anything about the way you look to reach a place where you can accept yourself, unless you want to change for your own personal reasons. Self-acceptance and body confidence can be difficult to achieve, but it is always attainable no matter what your body type is.
