We are on the precipice; we are on the cusp. The 2026 NFL season begins next week! For the New York Jets, Week 1 will determine both nothing and everything. Nothing because this team has a long road to travel on its way back to contention. One game will not make or break a plan that extensive. Everything because the most important thing is making a good first impression!
This is not Aaron Glenn’s first impression, as he’s entering his second year. But Week 1 of the ’26 season will indeed be the first impression made by a defense molded in his image. Last year, Glenn did not have a defense he liked. He traded away the biggest names and reformed the unit entirely. It remains to be seen whether that was a smart idea, but this is our first legitimate look. Glenn, along with defensive coordinator Brian Duker, and veterans Demario Davis and Minkah Fitzpatrick, will be tasked with implementing a new defensive identity from the one that crashed and burned in 2025.

Week 1 is also an important first impression for offensive coordinator Frank Reich and quarterback Geno Smith. This season could very well be approaching each of their last impressions in the NFL, at least at this level of an organization (OC and starting QB, respectively). The offense has talent; it will be mainly up to these two to see that talent maximized.
And then there’s the Week 1 opponent. The Jets must travel to Tennessee to take on former HC Robert Saleh and the Titans. This is the easiest game of the Jets’ first month, which speaks to the difficulty of the early schedule.

Are the Titans truly an easy opponent? Tennessee is an interesting team this season. They overhauled the coaching staff and roster but are rolling with the quarterback drafted by the previous regime. This will be Cam Ward’s second season at quarterback, and there is a lot of pressure on him to make drastic improvements. This should be a good spot for a new-look defense. There is even more uncertainty on the opponent’s side of the ball as Ward tries to acclimate to Brian Daboll’s offense for the first time, throwing to new hands in rookie Carnell Tate and signee Wan’Dale Robinson. The only familiar face out of the starters will be Tony Pollard in the backfield.

Can the Jets befuddle Ward? If Glenn and Duker are going to create a useful defensive scheme, it certainly feels like this is a spot where we’d expect to see it.
On the other side of the ball, Tennessee has a game-wrecker inside in Jeffrey Simmons, flanked by former Jet Jermaine Johnson. Saleh is a defensive wizard who has always created successful defenses. Will that be the case right out of the gate? It’s not a guarantee, which opens the door for a new-look Jets offense to find opportunities.

This game is almost two teams looking in the mirror at each other. The Titans are building a young QB, but otherwise, the situations are quite similar. If New York hopes to win some games this season and be competitive, this is one they have to have. If, instead, the team is treading water until the 2027 QB class, this game is just about building positive habits. We could know a lot about the direction of the franchise after Week 1.

Dan Salem: Don’t Make Me Say It
I’m caught between viewing September football for what it is, the real preseason, and knowing that every team has had two months to prepare for its Week 1 game and should therefore be at its absolute best. The New York Jets have actually done a good job of being at their best in Week 1, even if their record in Week 1 games is split. For Aaron Glenn, there is no bigger game on the schedule than Week 1 versus his predecessor Robert Saleh.

Most everyone wants to see Glenn succeed, even if you don’t like the Jets. He’s a warm and welcoming guy and it’s hard to dislike the man. It’s why he succeeded in Detroit as a coordinator and one of the reasons he had such a solid career as a player. But its also impossible to ignore the fact that Saleh was a good fit for the Jets until he was railroaded by Aaron Rodgers and others and the team turned against him. Glenn did not do much to inspire optimism last season, so facing Saleh is a bigger moment than most people realize.
New York is a better team on paper than Tennessee. I’d say Geno Smith and Cam Ward are on equal ground, albeit at opposite ends of their careers. The Jets have more playmakers and more talent overall, but that’s never what wins an individual game. New York needs this game for three reasons. It must prove its improvement, because the Titans are considered a bad team and decent teams beat bad teams. Glenn needs a win badly or fans are going to turn on him overnight. Finally, the Jets face top level opponents for the rest of September and this game is their best chance for a victory over the first two months of games.

Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago are New York’s next three opponents. It’s easy to see the Jets losing those three games before facing Cleveland in week 5. This team needs one win in September and Week 1 is it. Will Glenn have his team ready to rock and roll? I hate to say it, but I’m going to anyway. How New York plays in Week 1 will set the tone for the season. There is no leash for this team. No easing into the year or using September as the preseason like many good teams do. Expectations for the Jets may be low, but in order to be fun and approaching decent, New York must win in Week 1.
