BULL SH*T. ONE word describes the New York Jets and New York Giants week eight games. Followed by a few more words, because this is a blog, not a sound byte.

After Week 8 of the NFL season, New York teams are now 6-8-1 collectively. Actually 12-9-1 if you count Buffalo, but we do not count Buffalo around these parts. The New York Jets again played tough in week eight, while the Giants didn’t lose by sitting at home. Can you believe the Giants are truly still in first place?

How competent are the New York Jets this season? Enough to keep things close, but not enough to win. Can the New York Giants win their division? Seems like it. Todd loves the Giants and Dan loves the Jets. They both must take the proverbial podium and speak truth into the microphone. Also proverbial.

Were the New York Jets right to re-sign Breece Hall this offseason?

Todd Salem: A lot has gone wrong with this Jets season. The defense was bad last week and got worse. The offense continually fails in redzone and pressure situations. Aaron Glenn doesn’t seem long for this league. One of the smaller wrongs has been the insistent injury to Breece Hall. Hall has been week-to-week for…weeks now and still doesn’t have a return date from his quad injury.

In Hall’s absence, we have seen a full-on breakout from Braelon Allen. Allen was always thought of as a quality backup, but as we continue to learn in this league, any quality runner can be a legit Pro Bowl-caliber player at the position as long as his offensive line is above average.

Allen seems like a Pro Bowler already. Through eight games, Allen has played all eight but only five with Hall sidelined. Despite the truncated starting window, Allen ranks 10th in the NFL in rushing yards and seventh in yards per carry. He is straight-up one of the most reliable backs in the league right now.

When Hall returns, there are two areas of thought. The first is that this is one of those classic good problems to have. The Bears, the Rams, Seattle when healthy, elite teams like having two good backs to rotate. The Jets will be one of those! It will be a never-ending ground attack.

On the other hand, if Allen is this good, and the team has so many other needs, why did the front office re-sign Hall this very offseason to a three-year, $43.5 million contract? Everyone around the league assumed New York was going to trade Hall in 2025; they didn’t. Everyone assumed they would trade him in 2026; they didn’t. Everyone assumed they would then just let him walk in free agency; they didn’t.

Now, NYJ has one of the top 10 highest paid RBs and one of the top 10 league leaders in rushing, but they are two different guys. Is this the best allocation of resources?

Obviously, this is a bit of a leading question. With perfect hindsight, New York should have traded Hall last year, improved the defense and maybe had a well-rounded club right now. Instead, they have what is looking like a pretty solid offense, with Hall set to return to make it even better, yet a defense that can’t stop anyone, especially with David Bailey hurt. Great teams build on strengths, but average (or worse) teams have too many holes to fill to be that greedy.

Dan Salem: Because the Jets have so many first round picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, I do think they retain their offensive weapons and build upon that strength, but ALSO fix their defense. Retaining Breece Hall was a good decision. Considering how frequently running backs get injured, having two good ones is a dream scenario. They can also trade Hall and the receiving team does not have to worry about negotiating a new deal right away. This sets aside dead cap numbers and whatnot, but he’s an asset, plain and simple.

In terms of roster building, New York is doing everything right. Now it’s simply a matter of the current coaches flexing to fit their players, or bringing in new coaches who can scheme to the players’ strengths. I see the offense improving each week, even though they continue to struggle in short yardage situations. The defense has been unable to compensate for injuries on the defensive line and in the pass rush. New York also lacks solid cornerbacks because they can not stop an opponent’s best player.

Losing close games every week at least tells me a bunch of stuff is working, even if it isn’t all coming together. We talked about learning to win back in weeks two or three. The Jets are still learning and their results remind me a lot of the Giants last season. I would say these Jets have more talent, but the results are the same. Will Glenn find the answer, or will New York hire someone new to hopefully elevate the team? There are no wrong answers.

What’s the worst record with which the Giants could win the NFC East?

Todd Salem: The Giants were on bye in Week 8 and managed to gain a game on both the second-place Cowboys and then-third-place (now fourth) Eagles. The NFC East is fun! It begs the question, how bad is this division’s champion going to be, and how few wins will they need?

New York current sits at 4-2-1. They would be in fourth place if they were in the NFC West; fourth place and just half a game ahead of fifth place if in the North. But they’re not! They’re in the East. Already two losses clear of all the other East teams, it got me wondering how bad a champion Giants team’s record could be.

Because I do still think this team is kinda bad. Or maybe bad is too strong. They aren’t great; let’s put it that way. They have a +2 point differential and have zero wins over winning teams thus far. The thing is, the schedule doesn’t even get much harder. So how many wins are left for this club to grab despite everything that has gone wrong for them this year?

New York Giants Week 7 in ONE WORD: WATCH NOW – Just ONE Word Only

Obvious caveat: the Giants can lose to any team any week. That’s true for all NFL teams, but especially for this club that has a weak secondary, weak run defense, third-string quarterback, rookie kicker, and one good wide receiver.

Okay, back to having fun. For the rest of the season, the Giants will face five teams currently with winning records, and one of those is Cleveland. I’ll give the Giants a 1-4 record in those. Maybe they lose to Cleveland and beat one of Jacksonville, San Francisco, Seattle, or Detroit. Either way, 1-4.

New York then has another four divisional games. They’ve only played two thus far, going 1-0-1. Give me 2-2 for the rest. None of these teams are good, but the Giants aren’t good enough to run the table by any means. That brings the overall season record to 7-8-1 while being super fair. If anything, my assessment is overly negative toward the Giants. The final game that has yet to be mentioned: Week 12 at Indianapolis. The Colts are calling it quits and into rebuild mode, trading away their veterans. This is a win for New York.

The closest competitor in the division is Dallas. The Cowboys are 3-5 and would need to go 6-3, but I do not see six wins remaining on the Cowboys’ schedule, even if they sweep the rest of the East games. Washington would have to go 6-4, including beating New York on the road to win the tiebreaker. There could be six more wins for the Commanders if they play really well on the road. (They are currently winless on the road.) The Eagles would need to finish 7-2. That’s not happening.

I think the New York Giants can very realistically go 8-8-1 to win the NFC East.

Dan Salem: Eight wins might be all it takes to win the NFC East, but I believe the Giants do it with nine or ten victories. Harbaugh has taught New York how to win. Because much of the team suffered through so many close losses last year, it was a lesson they were all waiting to learn. This is not a great team, but its good enough every week.

I don’t believe any other team in the NFC East will finish with a winning record, but the Giants might. They are not going to play anyone significantly better for the rest of the season, one or two games aside. We always say that one score games even out for teams, but this feels like things evening out for the Giants from last year. Because of how they are winning, I see New York continuing to win the close games and hold leads. It won’t be pretty, but the Giants are heading to the playoffs as NFC East champions.
