ONE word to describe the New York Jets and New York Giants victories in week one. Followed by a few more words, because this is a blog, not a sound byte.

After Week 1 of the NFL season, New York teams are a perfect 2-0! A perfect 3-0 if you count Buffalo, but we do not count Buffalo around these parts. Both the New York Jets and New York Giants won in definitive fashion, ensuring some smiles for at least one more week. The word FUN stands out, but now we have questions.

Are the New York Jets for real this season? What have the New York Giants unlocked? Todd loves the Giants and Dan loves the Jets. They both must take the proverbial podium and speak truth into the microphone. Also proverbial.

Are the New York Jets a real team this season?
Todd Salem: There is a lot of pressure on Aaron Glenn and company to perform this season. He is sitting on one of the hottest seats in coaching right now because of his poor first season and dismantling of a defense with multiple Pro Bowlers. Week 1 was a god’s send.
The Jets proved they are certainly not the worst team in the league, and that’s something to build off of! They dismantled the Tennessee Titans on both sides of the ball. Cam Ward was lost offensively, as he tries to learn a new system, throwing to mostly new pass-catchers. New York’s lynchpin pass rushers, David Bailey and Will McDonald, each got a sack and tackle for loss.

The TEN running game accumulated good stats but could not be leaned on with the way the game script went. We wondered how the new-look Jet defense would fare against a mediocre opponent. Early results are positive. They can handle mediocre (or worse) opponents.
What about the other side of the ball? Those results were positive as well. Geno Smith picked Tennessee apart, and the running game got whatever it wanted. The only negative was some stalling as the offense approached the redzone, resulting in four field goal attempts.
Overall, it was a massive success for Glenn and company. This was a game the team had to have if they were going to be serious this season. From here, the schedule gets much tougher immediately. Did we see enough to think the Jets can hang with the teams of the NFC North? I’m not sure, but efficient, patient offense combined with impactful defense is hard to argue with.

Dan Salem: New York dominated a bad team, which is what good teams do. So are the Jets a good team? It’s to be determined, but we know they aren’t a bad team because in prior years they would have lost to the Titans, or barely won. New York controlled the game and blew Tennessee off the field, only giving up a single touchdown in garbage time and basically playing offense for more than two-thirds of the game.
More importantly, this game was fun! The Jets not only won but also humiliated their former coach in his own stadium and it wasn’t even close. New York played a clean game and showed good coaching to boot. With this win under their belts, the Jets have confidence enough to compete and maybe win a game or two over the next month. Because their opponents get very good immediately, this Week 1 victory was a necessity. They delivered.

What have the New York Giants unlocked?
Todd Salem: Speaking of efficient, patient offense, the New York Giants took it to Dallas to win their own Week 1 contest. The Giants were methodical and somewhat unstoppable. Jaxson Dart was pinpoint precise. The only thing that held them back were their own fumbles, fortunate to only lose one.
This was a wild outcome that I did not expect. It remains to be seen if this had more to do with Dallas being horrendous on that side of the ball, but early results are unimpeachable.

That matchup really explained the entire game. NY did whatever it wanted on offense, routinely finding receivers wide open on the same play design. It dictated what Dallas was able to do on offense too. The Cowboys barely got the ball. If not for a huge George Pickens drop and Dak Prescott interception, Dallas found success often as well. They just ran out of chances.
The Giants were able to provide pressure to Prescott with the rush but never brought him down. The secondary also got injured and penalized. Some of the penalties seemed very suspect, but others were obvious calls. I would deem the NY defensive performance as TBD. Thanks to the offense, we didn’t have to learn how good or bad they are.
If anything was lacking, it was huge, chunk plays. NY’s longest play of the game was a Dart scramble. I’m not sure that will cut it against the Rams in Week 2. However, whichever way you look at it, the Giants hit a homerun to start the 2026 season.

Dan Salem: Not only did the Giants defeat their arch rival, but they did so at home and in prime time. The Cowboys may have an awful defense, but New York made the entire team look foolish. They kept Dallas’ offense on the sidelines and had their way with them. Literally everything you’d hoped that Harbaugh would change has seemingly changed for this team.
Last season the Giants lost four or five of these exact games. They had a lead in the second half and blew it, but not this time. Similar to the Jets, they won with ball control and clean dominance. The tight end was very active and the running game was clicking. If you don’t let your opponent play offense for very long, then its hard for them to score enough to win. That is a no duh, but something the Giants executed perfectly.
We shall see how New York performs against better defenses, but the game plan is all there and they proved they can execute it to perfection. What a great way to start the season!
