Fitness Training: You VS Yourself the Ultimate Goal

The New Year is always a great time to reinvigorate your fitness training! It’s easy to compare yourself to others, but you vs yourself is the ultimate goal!

 
 

I love the new year because I love setting new goals for myself. I’m ready to tackle the year and tackle new fitness challenges, but this year is a bit different for me. I’m 28 weeks pregnant and I’m definitely feeling those 28 weeks. That means I’m constantly reminding myself of the ultimate fitness training goal. Its you versus yourself now and always. I’m working out every morning, but I’m adapting to me. Running outside became painful, so I’ve embraced cardio at the gym. All of our health situations are different and often they change, and that is okay! Fitness training is personal.

No matter where you are in your fitness training, always remind yourself that You Vs Yourself is the ultimate goal. Nothing else matters. The gym, workout classes, and fitness studios are going to be packed with people this time of year. That is inevitable and it can be intimidating, but its all in your mind! I used to go to a membership gym prior to living in a building with a private gym, and the new year was always my least favorite time. You feel like others are watching you as you workout, but I learned that it was all in my head. Those who truly enjoy exercise don’t make it about anyone else except themselves! It is the most important mindset to live by!

How does one live with this mindset? It starts with your fitness training partner or community. I’ve been exercising at a gym since I was 16 years old. I used to go with my brothers and I loved that I knew others at the gym. It made it fun and non-competitive. It’s how I dipped my toes into working out. Going with someone I trusted made it easy for me. My brothers also made it clear that they worked out for an hour, so I needed to keep myself busy for that time. This gave me the motivation to focus on myself for that hour! No one else mattered at the gym. It truly was all about me and that made it easy for me to see what truly is the ultimate goal. Make friends and work hard, but it’s always you versus yourself.

Tracking your fitness progress is a great way to keep your eyes on your ultimate goal. I love being able to see my progress over the week and the month. Even if it’s not as much as I’d hoped, there is always the opportunity to adjust. Becoming truly one with your fitness is not a sprint, but a marathon. It takes time. It takes patience and it doesn’t happen overnight. Comparing yourself to others is a fool’s errand, because their health and goals are uniquely their own. We are all different people with different bodies. That’s why your fitness training should only be about you versus yourself! That’s how you’re going to stay motivated and dedicated and keep a smile on your face.

Remember to take into account where you are in your life. I have to remind myself that I’m pregnant every day. I can’t do all of the same things that I could do last year and I have to be okay with that. Recognize what’s going on in your life. Are you working through an injury? Are you just getting back into fitness? Remind yourself of those things and act accordingly. You will get past whatever stage you’re at! You just have to embrace where you are.

 

Working out is my favorite part of the day. It’s my time to be with myself and do something for me. It’s not for anyone else. Remind yourself of that. No matter what your fitness goals may be, your ultimate goal is always You Vs Yourself!
