Running outside is amazing! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it is my favorite part of the day. There can be a lot of distractions, so learning to shut out the world is key. This is my running diary.
Diary of a Running Chick: May 16th, 2016
When I first started running, back in high school, I always ran outside and it was extremely challenging for me. I couldn’t fend off the distractions. The varied terrain, the cars, the constant need for motivation to keep on running even when I wanted to stop, plus all of the other activity around me was a struggle. The outside world ALWAYS crept into my runs. It was a big reason why I was so sporadic about running. I was extremely distracted.
Listening to music was my first step. It helped me shut out the outside world, and I’ve talked about how amazing it is to listen to music while running. But when I run with my man I don’t listen to music. We don’t always run side by side, even though I love it when we do because we can chat. He runs faster than I do, so usually its just me and the world. Thankfully I’ve learned to conquer the distractions without music and enjoy the moment.

I no longer need ANY help to shut out the world, and neither do you when it comes to running. I truly love just running outside and I love the different sounds that brings. These cool spring mornings have been amazing, because they’ve made it seem completely dead outside. Everyone is sleeping in a little later. Some mornings I don’t see any other runners and those are my favorite. It makes me feel like I’m completely alone with my thoughts and I love that!

When it comes to running, it’s easy to let anything be an excuse and a distraction. Work on not letting the outside world become a factor. I’ve been working hard this year on letting go of the weather and embracing whatever it may be. This used to be a big thing for me. I didn’t like to run if it was too cold or if it was rainy, because I didn’t like that it was affecting my world. That was just so silly. Why should it matter unless it’s snowing or very bad rain? I no longer let the weather ruin a running day for me.
The funny thing is, now that I don’t worry about what’s going on outside, I find myself enjoying running even more! It’s much nicer to not let those things affect me. It’s freeing since my goal is to always be able to run. This ensures that. I know myself and it’s easy to get distracted. It’s easy to find an excuse not to do something. That’s why we all must work on keeping obstacles out of our way!
I truly believe that everyone can love running. I understand all of the factors and challenges that stand in people’s way and I know that you can overcome all of them. All of the things that you initially dislike about running will end up being the things you love the most.
Running through the world with people driving, biking or walking is amazing! It’s powerful and there is something special about your run. Normally you won’t be doing anything like it the rest of your day. You see the world and your neighborhood through a different lens. The first step is shutting out the world and its distractions. Trust me, it’s worth it.
