Every uncomfortable and raw feeling that comes with a soulmate is smeared all over Past Lives. This movie stays true to life, unexpected and human at its core.
This is NOT a Christmas movie, so she’s isn’t cheating and ditching her husband for her one true love. Past Lives stays true to life, in that people don’t just abandon their entire life for someone they knew as a child, but don’t as an adult. Its sad, uncomfortable, heart warming, and moving. Past Lives makes you long for the impossible, because it was meant to be.

You want to root for these soulmates to run away together, but then you remember that they chose not to many times throughout their lives. Being torn apart as twelve year-old kids is hard. They didn’t control that. But when they reconnected twelve years later, neither chose to do anything more than talk on the computer. Life is a struggle and Past Lives twists you up within its unique little world.

I loved this movie because of how relatable and unexpected it was. Many of the common film tropes are explored, but very few are acted upon. Instead, the movie stays more true to life and provides us a look inside how hard the simple things can be.
