I’m hooked, but the missing links in His Dark Materials episode 1 were a burden. Too much prior knowledge and a lack of evil deeds leaves me on edge.
His Dark Materials episode 1 sucked me right in, but suffered from us knowing way too much. This created a ton of missing links in the story, but also opportunity for the show to take off. I detailed the story in my preview, but this first episode lacked surprises because we knew what was going to happen. We know who the bad guys are and what Lyra will ultimately do. This dramatically lowered the stakes. At least show us why the Magisterium is so evil!
Missing links aside, His Dark Materials episode 1 brought the dark fantasy I’ve been craving. This world is intense and deep, but it better stop telling us about it and start showing us the real horrors at play.
