I love step 4 of How to Be Zen. Even if you don’t have a traditional schedule you can still easily establish a daily routine. I don’t have a normal schedule in the sense I don’t go into a 9-5pm job, but I always have a daily routine no matter what I have going on.

The secret for me is to shift my daily routine. There was a period in my life when I thought if I couldn’t complete my daily routine exactly how I wanted to then I couldn’t do it. That’s a bad way to look at it. No matter what is going on you still do your routine.
Once you have a daily routine it definitely grounds you in the presence as well as makes you embrace everything that happens outside of it. Remember that sometimes your routine shifts for a while, but you will always be able to shift back.
