French Creek State Park

This park has 7,730 acres of land and spreads between New York City and Washington D.C. It is a great place to hike, camp, catch some fish, or ride a bike, and one of the best camping near Philadelphia. National Audubon Society designated the French Creek State Park as an important bird area, plus there is an important mammal area and a pine swamp.

The Park is open all year and you can make reservations from Monday to Saturday. Where can it be found?  It is located in Berks and Chester counties. There is a Park naturalist who will take you on a tour and give you a demonstration in the spring, summer and fall. This place is ADA accessible and pets are allowed.

 

 

Hickory Run State Park

Hickory Run State Park is located in the western foothills of the Pocono Mountains. It has 15,990 acres of land where you can hike on more than 40-miles of hiking trails, relax in the three state park natural areas, and fish trout in its streams. This Park is open from April to December.

What else can you do here? You can swim in Sand Spring Lake, hike across Boulder Field, cross-country ski Sand Spring Trail, camp in a rustic camping cottage, and keep on fishing. You can also play disc golf. This Park is wonderful to take your family on a short vacation. It is ADA accessible and pets are allowed.

 

Promised Land State Park

This State Park is located in Plocono Plateau on 3,000 acres of land. It is 1,800 feet above sea level and surrounded by Delaware State Forest. This park is perfect for fishing and enjoying a boat ride, but also camping. Spend the night at a rustic cabin, then hike and explore the forests where oak, beech, and hemlock trees call home.

They are open all year where you can stay with a tent, trailer or RV. Pets are allowed. If you love to be close to the water, then you can take advantage of kayaking while viewing the eagles’ nest. Try a hike on Little Falls Trail, or attend the environmental education program and have a wonderful day outdoors. There is a refreshment stand near the beach during the summer where you can enjoy a drink and grab something to eat.

 

 

Ricketts Glen State Park

This park is one of the most scenic areas in Pennsylvania. It is quite large, with 13,050 acres of land. It can be found in Luzerne, Sullivan and Columbia counties. When visiting the park, be sure to hike the Falls Trail System to see the glens. They are rich with free-flowing waterfalls that are amazing to see. Ganoga Falls is the highest of the waterfalls there.

Ricketts Glen State Park is open from April to December. Make sure to book a reservation. Then start hiking, followed by a cool down at Lake Jean. Enjoy the local ice cream, have a picnic or even a hunt. You will find a snack bar on the beach. Pets are allowed as well.

 

Blue Knob State Park

If you want a wild adventure, then go and visit Blue Knob State Park. It has 6,128 acres of land and is located in the northwestern tip of Bedford County. It can be colder here, as the park’s altitude is 3,146 feet. If you want to enjoy some solitude, then this park is for you.

Blue Knob is the second highest mountain in Pennsylvania, meaning you can enjoy skiing in the winter, plus hiking all summer. Its photo opportunities are endless. The Park is ADA accessible and there is a Blue Knob Ski Resort that will make all ski lovers happy.

 

If you want to spend a weekend vacation in nature, then camping near Philadelphia is a great opportunity to relax. These five State Parks are great for a quick holiday, or for a long vacation alone or with loved ones. Choose a campsite that fits your needs, but don’t forget to book your spot. Consider food and water supplies, and bring enough clothes, plus a solid pair of hiking shoes to explore nature’s beauty.
