The Kansas City Chiefs Are Inevitable, Even Next Year

Kansas City Chiefs

We must stop pretending, because the Kansas City Chiefs have been atop the NFL for six straight seasons. This team is inevitable, so how can anyone realistically top them as favorites?

Prepare for the intense sports debate that only sibling rivalry can conjure. Seesaw Sports, where Dan Salem and Todd Salem throw down on the NFL, MLB, NBA and more. Only on BuzzChomp. Two brothers from New York yell, scream and debate sports.

Thanks to Taylor Swift and the deep state, the Kansas City Chiefs are your 2024 Super Bowl champs! It didn’t hurt that San Francisco couldn’t generate consistent offense on Kansas City’s side of the field, and that their team MVP was probably Jake Moody. It also didn’t hurt that the Niners players reportedly didn’t know the overtime rules.

But it all comes back to the unrelenting force of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. This duo is unlike anything we’ve seen in the NFL since way back in, well, actually super recently. But if Belichick and Brady didn’t do what they did, Reid and Mahomes would be historic.

Looking ahead to the offseason and the upcoming 2024-25 campaign, it is hard to think anyone else has a chance. This past season was the year Kansas City fell off. The offense was a mess, receivers dropped more than they caught, Travis Kelce lost a step, and the team still won the Super Bowl. What would have to happen this offseason for the Chiefs NOT to be the favorites heading into the 2024-25 season?

Todd Salem: Who Will Be Better? Seriously, Who?

If Reid is still coaching and Mahomes is healthy, I can’t think of another possibility. The Chiefs are favorites. Maybe I wouldn’t go so far as to pick them over the field for next season’s championship, but I’d strongly consider them over the AFC field to at least make the game. Agree or disagree?

Teams will come out of nowhere to be contenders. Multiple teams may have better regular seasons than Kansas City next year, but it shouldn’t matter. As we said before the Super Bowl was played, this team has to be given the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. I still can’t figure why they were underdogs against San Francisco.

The 49ers are going to remain an uber talented team in 2024. I actually think they could be better than they were this season as Brock Purdy continues to develop in the system. I also don’t think the sky is falling around Kyle Shanahan. People are too quick to write off someone as not being capable of winning the big one. That’s only true until it’s not. Shanahan is a young coach and already one of the best in the game. Let’s pump the brakes.

With a lot of intrigue surrounding the draft coming up this spring and all the maturations with quarterbacks around the sport, it all comes back to the Chiefs. Everyone is chasing Mahomes and has a lot of ground to make up. He wasn’t perfect in the Super Bowl, and he was still good enough to not only carry his team to victory, but we all knew he was going to do it. He is inevitable.

Dan Salem: Coaching Ensures More Success

The Kansas City Chiefs are inevitable, but not because of Patrick Mahomes alone. Other teams have great quarterbacks. Baltimore, Buffalo, and Philadelphia all come to mind. Heck, throw in my New York Jets with a healthy Aaron Rodgers, or the Houston Texans if Stroud keeps getting better. What separates the Chiefs, and 49ers for that matter, is that they also have an incredibly great head coach. This is not to say that those other teams, besides the Jets, don’t have very good head coaches. They do have good head coaches, but not great ones.

Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan are great, hence the dynasty war that has not so quietly been going on since the 2019-2020 season. Kansas City has been in every AFC Championship over those five years (actually six straight dating back a year earlier), making four Super Bowls and winning three. San Francisco has been in four of the five NFC Championship games over those five years, making two Super Bowls and losing to Kansas City both times. The 49ers have had different quarterbacks over that span, while the Chiefs have had Mahomes. Many other teams have retained their excellent quarterbacks, but no one else is on this level. Coaching matters.

So next season, huh? For the Kansas City Chiefs to NOT be the favorites to win Super Bowl 59, something monumental must transpire. A Patrick Mahomes injury would certainly trigger this shift, but let’s focus on positives for their competition, rather than negatives for the Chiefs. San Francisco is right with them, but for the 49ers to overtake the title of favorite, they need to snag a BIG name free agent. Frankly, I’m not sure which position needs an upgrade, let alone who will be available at a position of need. San Francisco is loaded everywhere. But a big name defensive back or linebacker could help swing things in their favor.

Will a big name quarterback swap teams? Rodgers landed on the Jets last offseason, but after what went down, that team is simply hoping for a playoff appearance. Two bigger names that may be moving are Justin Fields and Kirk Cousins. Kyler Murray seems to be staying with Arizona, so we’ve got two. Which team was a quarterback away from being even better last year? The only team that even scratches the surface of this conversation is Pittsburgh, because they made the playoffs with a set of reasonably bad quarterbacks. But this is a foolish conversation, because the Chiefs are still on top, no matter how you cut the cake. Let’s stop pretending they aren’t and just move on to who is reasonably number two… behind San Francisco.
