Everyone has felt burnout at some point. No matter how interesting your job is or your life is, there is always a chance to feel like you’ve lost all motivation to carry on. The key is to avoid burnout before it strikes. No matter your current mood, its important to learn what burnout actually is, understand the advice available,  and position yourself to avoid it.

What is Burnout?

Burnout is the feeling of exhaustion, be it physically, mentally, or emotionally. It tends to occur when you feel overworked and under appreciated, and it can also happen when you just lose the interest to work.

There are many circumstances that can lead to burnout, and once you have it, it can have long lasting consequences. Consequences can range from putting less effort into your work, to being more prone to illness. In order to avoid burnout before it strikes, we must understand where it comes from.

What Exactly Causes It?

In most cases, burnout is due to work. Work that is repetitive, doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t give you much reward, and doesn’t allow you control can cause burnout. Many people who do repetitive jobs and deal with poor pay and ungrateful managers can end up burnt out.

Of course, there is a lot more than just work related cases. You may feel burnout from bad relationships, having little sleep, getting no help taking care of the kid or other family members; the list goes on.

Burnout can also be due to having a pessimistic, perfectionist attitude. Your personality can play a part in it too. Thankfully, no matter the cause of your burnout, there are many things you can do to change your life for the better.

What to do About it?

If you have burnout, you may feel like there is no way to get the fire back in you. Luckily, there are ways to avoid burnout.

If it’s work-related, see if you can fix it from the workplace. While getting a new job or position is a good solution, it’s not feasible for everyone. Instead, you should look into talking to your coworkers and managers more and discussing how you feel.

If there is someone who is bothering you and causing you to feel burnout, try to avoid talking to them if possible. We do understand that sometimes, that is hard to do, but if you can do it, you’re in a much better place.

Sleep more. Many Americans are feeling like this because of the lack of rest. Sleep is important, and odds are, you may not be getting enough. See how much sleep you need, and try to achieve it if possible.

You may just need new stimuli. Try to find a hobby or something you enjoy and invest some time into it. This may help you feel better as a result. For instance, if you like video games, try a new video game. For parents, maybe trying some new games or ideas like the ones here can help.

The ultimate way you can avoid burnout is by change. And the change obviously does not come overnight. You may have to have a long talk with yourself and figure out what you need to change and what you need to improve on. It can be overwhelming. If all else fails, then you should…

Seek Help

If you’re feeling burnt out and don’t know why, or you are wondering how you can deal with it, talk to a therapist. With therapy, the therapist can help you find the cause and the cure. Sometimes, the cause is so simple that you overlooked it. Other times, it can be a little more complex.

Whatever the case may be, online counseling may be able to help you. Try a counselor today and see what they can do for you. Chances are, you can improve and be a much better person in the end. Don’t let burnout consume you.
