Dinner at Home, a Treat Not a Feat!

Sometimes cooking can seem like more of a nuisance than anything else. You get home from a long day at work and all you want to do is kick off the shoes and relax, but dinner is still to come. It can be daunting, but if you plan ahead, making your own dinner can really be a luxury. You have control over portions, fats, ingredients, salt and seasoning in general. The best way to make this less overwhelming is planning. Decide what you are going to make for the week and do all the shopping and prep at once. Also, make a progressive meal plan. Here is a sample weekly menu.

Monday: Roasted Whole Chicken with Mixed Vegetables

Tuesday: Chicken Tacos with Rice and Beans (give Trader Joe’s fat free refried beans a try; they are cheap, easy and tasty)

Wednesday: Shredded Chicken Salad with Leftover Vegetables

Thursday: Meatloaf and Potatoes

Friday: Leftover Meatloaf Bolognese and Pasta

Go shopping for everything Sunday and do all the prep, so that all you have to do is the basics when you get home from dinner. Just knowing that half of the work is done makes everything seem a lot more hopeful than heavy. Having control over what you eat makes staying healthy a much more attainable lifestyle. It’s very easy to get used to take out and dining out, but it is expensive and you have very little control over what goes into what you order. So, make life easy and make dinner yourself! You will always be happy that you did!
