Life throws obstacles at us at the worst times, but usually that’s a signal for change! I always know it’s when I need a switch in my life and this happens with running too. Last week definitely tested my consistency, so I buckled down and stayed focused! How to be a consistent runner through life’s obstacles comes down to one simple trick; run whenever you can.

Step 1: Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t get out for a run. It took me a while to master this, but it’s the most important step for learning how to be a consistent runner through life’s obstacles. There are days I want to run, but I just can’t get out. Last week I experienced this twice. The first was due to my baby sleeping so poorly and the second was due to a bout with sickness. I really wanted to run both times but I knew I couldn’t. I didn’t beat myself up because I know that the universe told me to just chill!

Step 2: Let your run cleanse you! If you’re working toward a run goal, sometimes we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and forget that running is a way to cleanse. My runs always make me feel better. I always feel like I’m back on track after a great run! It’s why I love running first thing in the morning, because it sets the tone for my day.

Step 3: Always come back to running. There have been moments in my life when I haven’t been able to run, but I always come back to running. No matter what, I know that I will be back. Even if I get sick and can’t run, I’ll be back. I normally don’t like to take more than two days off, but even if I do, it’s okay. I remind myself that it’s just what I needed.

Step 4: Use running as your anchor. Running is my anchor because no matter how I’m feeling, it always makes me feel better. Running kept me feeling like me through my pregnancy. It has helped me get through so many of life’s obstacles because I’ve stayed consistent. That’s really the irony here. You need to become consistent and then stay consistent and not let anything derail you. It doesn’t mean that there won’t be weeks or months where you might not run as much, but as long you get out to run, that’s all that matters!

How to be a consistent runner through life’s obstacles is making sure that you get out there to run when you can! Always remember why you started and embrace that. For me, I love to run and I’m always a bit bummed when I can’t run, even when I know it’s for the best, like when I’m sick. I always come back to running and I always embrace every day that I get to run! It makes me who I am and I love being a consistent runner. It truly gets me through all of life’s obstacles.
