Travis Hunter Easily The Best Pick in NFL Draft 2025
He dominates at two of the top NFL positions, both WR and DB, so what’s stopping Travis Hunter from going number one in the NFL Draft? He’s easily the MVP.

All throughout the draft process for the 2025 NFL Draft, there have been two pieces of assumed fact. First, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders would be considered at the top of the board because they are the best quarterbacks. Second, the best actual players are Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter. We have a problem with the framing of both of those statements.
Having reached draft month, it seems all but assured that Tennessee will be taking Ward with the first overall pick, and second position is where intrigue grows. We know how important QB is to the sport, but our question is equally important. Why is Hunter not the number one pick?

We’ve had plenty of drafts set up with this premise in the past. The top overall player does not go first because he doesn’t play quarterback. However, we have never had this premise with these details. Hunter isn’t just in discussion as best overall player; he should actually be considered as TWO of the best players.
Yeah, yeah, Hunter can play both sides. People say it, but do they understand that? Hunter is the best defensive back prospect in the draft, and it’s not even close. Hunter is also the best wide receiver prospect in the draft, and it is also not even close. DB and WR are two of the five most important positions in the sport these days as well (trailing QB, pass rusher, and left tackle). Hunter is THAT good.
Travis Hunter Is One Of A Kind
Todd Salem:
As an outsider, if you don’t believe Hunter is going to play both sides of the ball, it makes sense to consider him as only one elite prospect, which means he shouldn’t be drafted ahead of the top QB in this scenario. But as the team actually making the pick, you would have say in whether he does. Tennessee can tell Hunter he will be a corner and a wide receiver; it is up to them!
It certainly wouldn’t be easy for him. Learning all the defense schemes and plays, while also learning all his receiver route trees and building rapport with the quarterback is a lot to ask. But he just did that in college and proved he was the best at both.

With all that said, wouldn’t the prospect Travis Hunter be more valuable than Ward (or whomever your choice is as top QB)? Framed another way for argument’s sake, would you rather have a Pro Bowl corner AND a Pro Bowl receiver or have a Pro Bowl quarterback? For a real-world example, if you’re the Denver Broncos, is it more valuable to have Patrick Surtain plus Courtland Sutton or have Bo Nix?
Now, maybe you’ll tell me I’m being stupid. That it is still better to have the QB, still more important to have Nix for the Broncos. I guess I’d listen to that argument. But then, Hunter should be a slam-dunk selection at second overall, with no valid case against. It feels like everyone is shorting Hunter in this draft process, just lumping him in with Abdul Carter, when he is a potentially once-in-a-lifetime prospect.
Dan Salem:
I believe your use of the Broncos for comparison’s sake was a poor choice, because I simply can’t view Bo Nix at a level worthy of this discussion. At least not yet. But that is not the point! Quarterback is and will likely remain the most important position in football for years to come. But I consistently find it foolish when teams pick a QB because they need one, rather than the best player available, especially in the top ten of the draft. There are simply too many viable veteran QBs available to justify picking a risk over a proven reward.
We see it year after year. A quarterback who “stunk” with one team finds new life on another, because he has matured and his play style is now a better fit for the team who grabs him with low expectations. We also see how sinking big money into a QB, either in free agency or via top picks in the draft, completely backfires on teams. CJ Stroud was worth the pick. Jayden Daniels was worth the pick, but was Bo Nix? I’m not so sure, because he did fine, but did he play well enough to justify passing on the best player available? Some believe he’s the real deal, but we don’t know yet. So is Cam Ward the next Stroud or Daniels? Will he play great to begin with? Can he be the Titans’ leader and face of the franchise?

Travis Hunter is absolutely more valuable than Ward, but it’s truly unlikely he plays both offense and defense. Why would he shorten his career like that, taking double punishment while only getting paid for one position? He won’t be getting two salaries, but he will be the best on his new team at either DB or WR, whichever he’s asked to play. Hunter should be the top pick this year, because Tennessee does not have enough of a team built to provide Ward a platform for immediate success.
Pairing Hunter with a veteran quarterback could yield immediate results. The Titans chose to pass on free agency, so we basically know what they are going to do. BUT if they do draft Hunter, then the Giants can trade one of their hoard of QBs to Tennessee after the fact, because New York then leaves the draft with four quarterbacks on their roster. Sometimes it makes sense to swing for the fences and draft a QB with the top pick, but it certainly can’t make sense to do so every single year for whichever team happens to be picking first. This is one of those years where another player’s talent far outweighs the pros of picking the best QB, yet Hunter won’t go first. He probably won’t go second either, because the Browns don’t know what they are doing. Lucky for you and your Giants sitting at three, because you likely luck into the best player in a long long time. Will he mesh with Nabers on offense, or be your best new defender? Options are fun.
