What does the science say?
A recent study published in Nature Communications found that two grape compounds may prove beneficial in treating and defending against stress-induced depression. Both dihydrocaffeic acid (DHCA) and malvidin-3’-O-glucoside, nutrients found in grapes, mitigated stress-induced depression in mice during the study. Using both of these nutrients, the researchers found that stress-related inflammation was reduced along with maintaining the brain’s synapses at regular levels. The research team is hopeful that these nutrients may prove to be an effective treatment for depression and anxiety in the future.
An additional study looked at red wine’s ability to fight against tooth decay and gum disease. While experts warn against using these findings to encourage more drinking, researchers found components from red wine, called polyphenols, helped fight off harmful bacteria found in the mouth. Wine extract supplements were tested on bacteria that stick to teeth and gums, causing dental decay and disease. The polyphenols from red wine proved to be quite effective in removing bacteria, which could lead way to new dental treatments.
Wine has also been found to be good for heart health. Light drinking has proven to increase blood vessel cell health, which ultimately improves the flow of blood. This not only reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease, but reduces the risk of blood clots as well. Due to the increased blood flow, there may be a lower risk for stroke.
