Change is afoot at the quarterback position in NFL Week 4, but that doesn’t truly hep things. Once again it wasn’t pretty and it certainly wasn’t the result anyone wanted. Both New York football teams have yet to win, so we answer one ULTIMATE question facing the New York Jets and New York Giants in NFL week 4, but more importantly, you too must provide answers.

The Jets quarterback situation is put on the hot seat in our second question. But first we skip past the obvious question facing the Giants and ask something even more pressing. Literally everyone is asking, outsiders are laughing or averting their eyes, but someone must step up to the podium and fire back. Tough questions require hard answers.
New York Giants and Jets: NFL Week 4
1. Can both sides of the ball show up together for the New York Giants?
Todd Salem: In Week 1, the defense got pressure up front and held its own. The offense was horrendous. In Week 2, the reverse happened. Now, in Week 3, we are right back to the beginning. The defense bended but never really broke all game, while the offense couldn’t do a damn thing.
The running game looked solid; I will give them that. But passing the football was a complete zero. It didn’t help that Tyrone Tracy went down early, and Graham Gano got hurt before the game even started. Nevertheless, the Giants have yet to have both sides of the ball operating in sync.

Any opponent who is going to take Malik Nabers out of the game has a good chance of shutting down the Giants offense. Over the course of the next two weeks, Nabers should find much more space than he was allocated in this contest. However, that is no guarantee that all the other pieces will come together as well. Plus, now we have a rookie QB entering the conversation.
Next week sees the undefeated Chargers come to town. I do not like the defense’s chances of shutting down the powerful run game or pinpoint passing of Los Angeles. Not to get too far ahead, but obviously the following week against New Orleans must be circled as a turning point. It’s funny. The Giants are a bad football team right now, but if you take their Week 1 or 3 defense and pair it with the Week 2 offense, this team looks great. That’s the difference. Every team has enough talent to look good in specific spurts, but truly good teams either look good all the time or can maneuver around shortcomings to still find success.
Dan Salem: We must not underestimate just how bad the Dallas defense truly is. It allowed the Giants to shine offensively, but there aren’t a ton of piss poor defenses on New York’s schedule. Versus Washington and Kansas City, two average defenses (maybe better, hard to say right now), the Giants folded. New York has one playmaker on offense, which makes it easy for a defense with at least one great player of its own to eliminate the threat. It’s about time for Jaxson Dart and thankfully we get him.

You are spot on with the New Orleans game being critical, because the Saints defense is a great spot for Dart to show we he’s truly capable of. New York’s defense of week 1 and 3 is closer to the real thing, but as you noted, this is a bad team. They are going to struggle all season, yet Dart gives everyone something to believe in. I’ll be watching to see if the Giants can keep their run game going next week, because without that they are lost. I believe both sides of the ball will show up at least once or twice this season, with New Orleans the most likely first time.

2. Is there a QB battle brewing for the New York Jets?
Todd Salem: The Jets game came down to the final seconds. The excitement stemmed from a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown and the ensuing response by Tampa Bay to drive down for the win. The excitement did not stem from the play of New York’s quarterback.
Justin Fields was sidelined for this one with a concussion. In his place was long-time veteran backup, Tyrod Taylor. There is no longer any flash to Taylor’s game. He does have some wheels to run, but his value is mostly in consistency. He can consistently complete passes underneath and over the middle. He doesn’t make too many mistakes and can move the chains.

With no help from the offensive line or running game, that was not enough in this game. Taylor doesn’t take shots down the field – ever, and it left the Jets without enough punch to hang with TB, even with a special teams touchdown.
However, it may be enough moving forward. Fields is an incomplete player. He lacks any sort of consistency through the air. His legs are better than Taylor’s at this point in each one’s career, but it leaves Fields-led offenses feeling unsteady and uneven.

Is there enough here with Taylor to let him continue to start? It’s a floor/ceiling discussion at the end of the day, and I think the Jets should turn back to the higher-ceiling player in Fields. I could buy an argument that Taylor gives the team a better chance to win next week against a weak Miami squad, where mistakes will be heightened. But I also think Fields is the better answer overall…if he is healthy enough to go.
Dan Salem: Emphatically no way! Tyrod Taylor is an excellent backup, because he can hold a team together and run the offense effectively… for one to three games at most. Taylor always gets hurt, it’s just a matter of when, not if, at this point in his career. The only way he remains a viable backup for the Jets is if he’s back on the sidelines as the backup next week. Perhaps Taylor has another good game in him, but the team cannot risk it.

I tried asking other Jets fans who the third string QB is and none of us know. We don’t want to find out. Hopefully Fields is healthy enough to play next week. He needs to be the starter because of his higher ceiling and ability to also play consistently well. There are only one or two more games where New York faces a top five defense like Buffalo, and one of them is their rematch with the Bills themselves. Fields to Wilson is a real threat, assuming the run game gets going and Fields has time to throw. I was surprised the Bucs were able to shut down the run, but it’s certainly easier without a passing threat downfield. Once the Jets can open the field up, they can consistently succeed on offense. With two losses by two points each, this team is actually close. They just might not get there until next season.
