ONE word to describe the New York Jets and New York Giants week four games. Followed by a few more words, because this is a blog, not a sound byte.

After Week 4 of the NFL season, New York teams are now 4-4 collectively. Actually 7-5 if you count Buffalo, but we do not count Buffalo around these parts. Both the New York Jets and New York Giants played ugly in week four, but with opposite outcomes once again. At least one still has its starting quarterback around.

How competent are the New York Jets this season? Can the New York Giants win their division? Todd loves the Giants and Dan loves the Jets. They both must take the proverbial podium and speak truth into the microphone. Also proverbial.

Are the New York Giants alone in first place!?

Todd Salem: Why yes, yes they are. Okay, that isn’t exactly an analytical question to recap the week, but it’s crazy! This Giants team, led by the boneheaded Jameis Winston, and without Brian Burns, is alone in first place in the NFC East.

Before we get to Winston and all the mess of this contest, the defense’s stand at the end of the game was epic. Arizona had about eight tries to tie the game (and win it with an extra point), but the secondary kept holding up. Deonte Banks was called for a very questionable pass interference and then got his revenge by walking it off with a time-expiring pick-six. I wonder if this performance can be a career-impacting change for Banks, who to this point has been an utter bust.

This was a great win for New York, especially considering how much went wrong. There were six turnovers in this game, three by each club. The offensive line gave up four sacks and seven QB hits. The running game averaged just 3.1 yards per carry. Winston was throwing the ball all over the field, for better and for worse.

(The Winston experience in a nutshell: the dude’s been getting flushed all game, taking sacks, throwing wild picks. Late in the third quarter, he got flushed out yet again on a third-and-long. He had two wide-open receivers, one in each flat. Either one would have easily gained 10+ yards but may have fallen short of the first down. Instead, Winston just uncorks a throw 40 yards down the field into coverage to Malachi Fields…who catches it for the first.)

Despite all that, the Giants came out victorious. It brings me back to the Jets discussion. Are we seeing the Giants trending in the right direction, or are the opponents just not very good? Unfortunately, I lean toward the latter. We knew the Giants were entering a soft spot in their schedule. They have taken advantage; give them credit for that. But I continue to wonder if this team is actually any good.

All of the next three games are also winnable, even with the up-and-down nature of the club currently. I need to see more consistency from the lines though. The offensive line has felt off with Winston back there, like they still expect to be blocking for a guy who can move around. The defensive line has been an even bigger disappointment, even before Burns went out.

Am I off-base to say that the Jets and Giants are in the same situation if not for schedule strength and head coaching acumen? Flip the opponents and flip Glenn with Harbaugh, and we could see the Jets at 3-1 and the Giants looking at 1-3.

Dan Salem: The Giants are practically the same team as the Jets, with a crazier man playing quarterback. They are exactly who we thought they would be, and are beating the bad teams. Tennessee and Arizona are most likely bottom-five teams. New York should absolutely beat them. The Giants squeaked by both opponents with a wildly inconsistent backup quarterback leading the way. Bravo?

It’s wonderful that the Giants are in first place. Their schedule is easy and their division is just as easy, so they may actually find themselves near the top later in the year as well. But they are not impressing anyone by beating teams we all know are bad. Minus Jaxson Dart, the Giants are average at best.

Harbaugh’s job is not in question, but New York must show similar improvement to its stadium mates. The defense has to get better and the Giants must cut down on their turnovers. This team was blown off the field by the Rams who are mere 2-2 right now. When another good opponent comes to play, we will learn just how spunky this New York team is. I’m afraid of the answer with Dart on the sidelines.

Are the New York Jets trending in the wrong direction?

Todd Salem: The Jets got their interception in Week 4, but not much else went right. Are we seeing a case of the team trending in the wrong direction, or are the opponents simply getting better?

Week 4 was the worst game this team has played. Other than redzone defense keeping them within shouting distance, nothing else went right. Minkah Fitzpatrick secured the team’s first interception in over a year, but the offense had trouble generating anything through the air. Geno Smith was putrid, but he also had very few attempts to be anything better than that.

The most glaring issue was the defensive front getting pushed around by Chicago’s offensive line. The Bears controlled the entire game. They eclipsed 200 yards rushing despite having a backup quarterback leading the passing game. Time of possession doesn’t often tell a whole lot, but in this game, it was informative. Chicago had the ball for 42 minutes and 45 seconds of the 60-minute game. If not for the turnovers and holds in the redzone, New York would’ve been blown out.

Losing the battle in the trenches was also an issue last week. You needed to see the team force turnovers; that happened. They won the turnover battle 2-0. The Jets also needed to be better in the trenches; that did not happen. The easy caveat here is that Detroit and Chicago have really good offensive lines. So, are the Jets actually getting worse?

My kindest read of the situation is to say the Jets are the same team they’ve been each week. The opponents have gotten better, as we expected, so the team looks slightly worse. That, though, is not a good thing. A young team with a supposedly improving nucleus and coaching staff should be getting better, not standing still!

After a year plus, I have yet to see anything to indicate Aaron Glenn is a good coach, and that is worrisome. Geno Smith can have a bad game, but Glenn has to be able to coach up his players above this set plateau we have been given.

Dan Salem: This is certainly the same team and I’ve seen improvements in some areas, but they are minor. The Jets glaring weaknesses have not changed and with a stronger opponent like Chicago, the game wasn’t even close. New York can not stop the run and they are kinda bad in pass protection when their opponent blitzes. Where do they go from here?

I refuse to write off a head coach after one bad season and a consistently average start to year two. Glenn changed his coordinators, so this is a new staff so to speak. If the team falls flat and can’t even maintain the level of competency they showed in September, then sure, he’s no good for this team as head coach. But we need the full year to know this.

We truly learned only one thing about the Jets in week 4. They are who we thought they were, a spunky team that struggles to compete with playoff teams. For Glenn to prove he deserves a year three to keep this team moving in the right direction, the Jets must beat the average and bad teams. While the Browns have surprised us, New York should beat them and his is a true must win game coming up.
