Cowboys, Bills Have Lots To Prove In NFL Week 15

nfl week 15

There will be only one winner in NFL Week 15, but the Cowboys and Bills both must prove why teams should fear them in the playoffs. Greatness comes in many colors.

Week 14 in the NFL was all about lost opportunities for playoff contenders around the sport. The AFC wildcard picture is a Jackson Pollock. The NFC isn’t much clearer. In a strange bit of happenstance though, NFL Week 15 sees two of the teams that caused some ruckus the previous week face off against each other. Winners unite!

The Eagles and Chiefs were the cream of the NFL. We outlined last week how Philadelphia was set up so nicely to put a gulf between it and Dallas in the NFC East. All they had to do was win that head-to-head contest. It didn’t happen. Not only did it not happen, the Eagles got swamped by the Cowboys, dropping them into a tie in the East.

Kansas City was in an even better position, against an even shakier opponent. We know about Buffalo’s ceiling though. And after the Bills took down KC, they now find themselves smack back in the middle of the playoff chase. Watch out.

It all comes to a head in NFL Week 15. Byes are over and past, Saturday games are beginning, and Dallas travels to Buffalo to take on the Bills Sunday afternoon. Considering the muddled field, Buffalo obviously needs this win more than Dallas, but our interest in this game is more about the future outlook. Who’s better and who’s the more formidable playoff opponent? They aren’t the same.

Todd Salem: Fear The Bills

Which is the better team between Buffalo and Dallas? Are these the two squads opponents would be most fearful of right now in a potential playoff game? Yes and no.

Before the season, these two teams were actually my favorite picks to win the championship. The Bills have faltered in a major way, but not enough to remove them from consideration. All they’ve done to this point is make their path incredibly difficult. Until they are actually eliminated, this is a potential playoff team no one wants to see.

We just saw why against Kansas City. Even in a lower scoring game, the defense can make enough plays to thwart the opposing offense. And there is no one more formidable for a defense than Josh Allen. I say it translates once again in the playoffs.

For Dallas, the picture is much clearer. The playoffs are a lock; the division title is comfortably within reach; the defense is elite; the offense is led by arguably the favorite for league MVP. Until this past week, I wondered if they were the Miami of the NFC: the really good team who beat everyone it should but came up short against stiff competition. Miami is STILL that, but Dallas got that monkey off its back with a legitimate win.

The Cowboys are the easy answer to which is the better team I suppose. But it’s funny. Even if Dak Prescott wins league MVP and leads his team to the NFC East title and a potential one seed, I still know I’d be more afraid of facing Josh Allen in a playoff game.

Dan Salem: Cowboys Must Prove Playoff Pedigree

Your sentiments are not misguided. Dallas is the more formidable opponent, but they are not the more formidable or worrisome playoff opponent. The Cowboys have a history of being very good in the regular season, as well as coming up small in the playoffs. Miami has a history of coming up small in cold weather. Buffalo has a history of doing more with less, especially in the playoffs. Fear the Bills.

The NFL regular season is a fun undertaking that is becoming more and more like the college football regular season each year. NFL Week 15 pretty much proves this, because the top is nearly set in stone, while the middle is an amalgamation of good to mediocre teams, all separated by one or two games. Buffalo is a good team that should scare no one this regular season. Have they turned things around, or did they catch Kansas City (who is also suspect) with their pants down?

Both the Bills and Chiefs are simply getting by this season, winning more than enough to make the playoffs. This is what truly matters, because both teams are scary playoff matchups. The Cowboys are doing quite the opposite, dominating this regular season with zero playoff pedigree to lean on. While I know that Dallas just whupped Philly, I would expect the Eagles to solidly put them in their place if and when they face off in the postseason. Narratives change, but not all of them all at once.

The best team in each conference currently holds the best record. Baltimore and San Francisco each have ten wins and no one is better in either the AFC or NFC respectively. Sure, both the Eagles and Cowboys sit alongside the 49ers with ten wins in the NFC, but we know who to fear. The muddled mess won’t fully settle in NFL Week 15, but it should clear up a bit. Yet the playoffs are when the truly good teams get to play their best. Here’s hoping we get to see the Chiefs cry about it one more time.
