Ranked sixth among the top-grossing spa services, its easy to see why 62% of American women reported to removing unwanted hair. A recent study found that women groom to facilitate sexual activity, but also for hygiene purposes. Men are no exceptions to this trend, but most people do not realize how important the actual method of hair removal can be. Between shaving and waxing, more users are looking towards a more natural and pain-free way to remove hair: Sugaring.

Dating all the way back to the ancient Egyptians, sugaring was the most common method of hair removal. Today, more salons and home users are turning to this basic sugar + lemon + purified water mixture for a natural solution to unwanted hair. So, is sugaring really a thing? Here’s why waxers are making the switch.

Shaving Just Won’t Cut It

The easiest and less time-consuming way to remove excess hair is to shave. However, while sugaring is quite similar to waxing, it does reap more benefits than the two combined. Most people rely on just a simple razor and often leave out the shaving gel to prevent dry skin, cuts, and those pesky ingrown hairs.

When you shave the same areas repeatedly, it can lead to irritation caused by the chemical content. Not to mention, since the hair is not removed by the root, it will grow faster, darker, and ultimately thicker.

Sugaring vs. Waxing: Is there a difference?

Completely! Waxing is applied in the direction of the hair, working against it. This leads the pores to become more at risk of bacterial infections to exposed skin. Meanwhile, sugaring is applied in the opposite direction of the hair growth and removed with it. Not to mention, traditional methods of waxing either harden the skin or use muslin strips before removing, making it all the more painful.

Sugaring Pros vs. Cons

Pros:

  • Suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive
  • All natural ingredients and hypoallergenic
  • Results last up to 1.5 months
  • Reduces the risk of ingrown hairs
  • An eco-friendly solution that won’t break your budget

Cons:

  • More time-consuming than shaving
  • When done poorly, it can lead to breaking and irritation
  • Can be messy when you’re a beginner

Why Women are Choosing To Lay Bare With Sugar

The natural sugar paste never sticks to the skin, only to the dead skin cells. Thus, it works as the perfect exfoliator. The mixture penetrates into the hair follicle, removing the hair and inner root effectively. As a result, this gentle method leaves your skin feeling fresh, silky, and smooth without the cause of pain or major ingrown.

Just as with all hygienic products and methods, the quality of the kit matters. If you plan to try sugaring, be sure to have your first time done at a reputable spa parlor. Not only will you learn the basic steps, but also see the results of quality sugaring.
