cannabis baking

Gone are the days of rolling the dice with cannabis infused treats. It’s easy to make a delicious pot brownie and know exactly how it will affect you. I’ve spent years learning how to successfully bake marijuana goodies that are vegan friendly. Use my cannabis baking tips for a perfect recipe!

Eating cannabis edibles was always a roll of the dice, especially if those treats were homemade. Even buying from a shop can be tricky until you learn how 10mg of THC affects you versus 5mg. Things get more challenging when you want to eat an entire cookie, yet that cookie is meant to be split into 10 pieces. Don’t eat the entire 100mg cookie, or you will be in for a wild and unsettling adventure. So how does one make delicious homemade cannabis treats and also get a desirable dosage? Using some expert tips from a seasoned baker like myself, vegan friendly of course.

On the flip side, you certainly don’t want to eat a whole brownie without feeling a thing. Rest assured, I’ve experienced both the highs and lows, pun intended. There is no need for guessing games or bad recipes! I’ve got your flawless cannabis baking tips for perfect recipes that are vegan friendly!

Cannabis Baking Tips – Vegan Friendly

1. Always Decarb Your Cannabis

The first thing you need to do to ensure that your recipe is perfect is decarb your cannabis. We’ve all had a cannabis treat that someone made and messed up. They used an entire 1/8th of marijuana, but you don’t feel a thing. Most likely they did not decarb their cannabis prior to baking. What does that actually mean? Your raw cannabis flowers are technically not digestible, so you need to fix this. By decarbing them you’re making it so they are digestible and they will get you high once they’ve been made it into your butter or oil.

How do you decarb cannabis? It’s super easy. All you need is an oven, baking sheet, parchment paper or aluminum foil, and your cannabis. Decarb the raw flower at a low temperature, 225 degrees Fahrenheit, for 30 to 35 minutes. First, grind up your cannabis and spread it thinly on the parchment paper atop your baking sheet. Then put it in the oven and voila! After 35 minutes your cannabis will look a little toasty and it will need to cool for an additional 30 minutes before you store it, or move along to the next step of infusing it in a fat.

2. Infuse Your Cannabis with Fat

Years ago I had a friend tell me to just throw your cannabis into your brownie mix and you’re good to go. That is ridiculous and I knew back then it was absolutely crazy and by no means the way to make any sort of infused cannabis treat. You need to first decide what type of infusion you want and using your virgin recipe is a good way to choose. You need to infuse your cannabis with a fat, so that means using an oil, butter, or cream, though I don’t recommend using a cream. I highly recommend making a large batch of your butter or oil and using it for all of your baking needs.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to butter is to combine one pound of butter with 1/2 ounce of flower, yielding one pound of cannabis infused butter aka cannabutter. Basically your goal is to have delicious treats with about 10mg of THC per serving. That is the standard for cannabis treats. If your one pound of cannabutter contains 1/2 ounce of 10 percent THC flower (10-15% is standard), that’s roughly 140 servings of your cannabutter, with 10mg of THC per serving. By knowing the THC percentage of your flower, you can figure out the strength per serving. Do not throw all of your cannabutter into your treats.

If your recipe calls for one full pound of butter, you need to split that and use only the servings of cannabutter you desire in the final recipe. Using brownies as an example, if you want to make 24 brownies or 24 servings, you can use 1/4 pound of cannabutter with 3/4 pound vegan butter. This will give you 35 servings of cannabutter, so a bit stronger than 10mg per brownie. It does cook down, so you will end up with nearly your 10mg per serving. I’ve found that plant based butter is great to use for making cannabutter. I use Earth Balance butter sticks all the time. You can also use olive oil or coconut oil and it turns out just as amazing!

How do you infuse your cannabis? The double boiler method is my favorite. Fill up a large pot with water and bring the water to a boil. Take a smaller pot or glass bowl and add in your vegan butter. Put the smaller pot on top of the boiling water in the larger pot and melt your butter completely. Melt your butter FIRST and then add in your ground, decarbed cannabis flower. Add an additional 1 to 2 cups of water into the larger pot beneath your cannabutter mixture, as well as into the mixture itself. This will help to make sure your butter does not burn. Lower your heat and let it simmer for 2-3 hours. This takes a while, BUT I always set incremental timers to make sure the water doesn’t get too low in the large pot. Add in more water as needed and occasionally stir your cannabutter.

Once the butter is done and cooled, strain it! Pour it over a cheese cloth and into a jar or container. You can ring out the cheese cloth to make sure you get all of the butter into your container. Refrigerate your butter and then check on it to make sure no excess water collected at the bottom. Once it’s fully refrigerated, after about one hour, you can clear away any excess water if you have some.

3. Sample Your Dosage Before Baking

This is something I previously skipped over and honestly, I was just being silly. You’ve taken the time to decarb your cannabis and infuse your butter or oil. Now you need to know the affects. The strain you use, Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid, dictates the way the cannabutter makes you feel. Try it out! A good rule of thumb is to spread about one serving, 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon, onto a piece of toast and try it out. This will give you a good range of how your dosage is! The worst thing you can do is spend all this time making your delicious cannabis treat and be unhappy with the final dosage. This is all about setting yourself up for those perfect cannabis recipes.

4. Pick the Perfect Dosage for your Recipe

This is the best part of baking with cannabis. What type of infused treat will you make? Going the traditional route of making brownies is great, especially if you’re a newbie in the world of cannabis baking. Brownies are truly so easy! You can adapt my vegan brownies recipe simply by substituting! The way I do it is by using half cannabutter and half vegan butter. Do not just throw a full 1/2 cup of vegan cannabutter in there, because your brownies will be off the charts and too strong!

Once you’ve made your delicious brownies, try half a brownie first see how you feel after 30 minutes. Then and only then can you eat more, if you’d like the affects to be stronger. A really good way at figuring out the perfect dosage is to invite a few friends over and have them each try a brownie or two. If each friend has a different tolerance to cannabis, then you’ll get a full spectrum of how strong your brownies are, as well the strength of your cannabutter. Make notes and repeat!

Much like vegan baking, cannabis baking is a skill you learn and work to perfect. Trial and error is how I worked the kinks out and began creating delicious vegan cannabis infused treats. Take your time and have fun! It’s a thrill to learn your dosage and create a perfect homemade dessert. Happy 420 and share with us your perfect recipes!
