So many solid moves were made, but only two are truly worthy of being considered the greatest move of the NFL offseason. Did the Vikings or 49ers do it best?

We touched on all the moves made in free agency by both the New York Jets and Giants. However, there are 30 other teams! Free agency was slightly underwhelming this year, but there were still a lot of impactful signings that took place that will greatly affect the 2026 NFL season.

What was your favorite move of the entire free agency period? This could be one we already highlighted, taking place in New York. This could be a team primed for contention that will be pushed over the top; it could also be a rebuilding team who made an important step. We will also include trades during this period. It doesn’t have to be strictly a team signing an unsigned player. A lot of trades are ‘free-agency adjacent’ because they replace what could have been a veteran being released and entering the market for real. So what move was the best? San Francisco and Minnesota vie for the title.

Vikings adding Kyler Murray is Easily the BEST Move
Todd Salem: I’ll touch on just a few moves I liked overall before closing with my top pick.
Detroit traded away fan favorite David Montgomery to Houston. Montgomery was a good player but easily replaceable. In fact, Detroit replaced him with Isiah Pacheco in free agency. They were already planning to lean on Jahmyr Gibbs more next season, lessening Montgomery’s usefulness, and Pacheco enters as a perfectly viable backup. On top of that, Detroit received a rotational offensive lineman, a mid-round 2026 draft pick, and a late-round 2027 pick in the trade.

Pittsburgh traded for Michael Pittman. It was a sensible and cheap acquisition because Indianapolis priced themselves out of keeping Pittman after going over the top to bring back Alec Pierce. Pittman isn’t an elite receiver in this league, but he is comfortably in that second tier of play-makers and is a much-needed complement to deep-threat DK Metcalf.
The LA Chargers signed center Tyler Biadasz. He’s one of the best at his position in the league and went for a fraction of what it took Las Vegas to sign Tyler Linderbaum. For a team whose offensive line fell to shambles last season, adding a top-end center should solidify the unit in front of Justin Herbert.

Those moves, though, are all appetizers to the main course. The best move of the free agency period was a contender adding a starter at the most important position for the least amount of money. No, not that one; the other one!
Sure, Atlanta added quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for the veteran minimum. That sentence fits the bill of what I just described, but it’s not the right answer. This other team is more talented overall and signed a better quarterback.

Minnesota added Kyler Murray for the veteran minimum. His star has dimmed these past couple years, but this is still a talented quarterback who certainly ranks among the top half at his position at worst. That means the Vikings may have just added a starting QB for pennies who will be a major upgrade on what they got out of the position a season ago. With the defense and skill players it has, this team is trying to compete right now, and any bounce-back for Murray from the change of scenery is pure profit for Minnesota.

Mike Evans Joining the 49ers was BEST Move
Dan Salem: Murray is an excellent add for the Vikings, but my favorite acquisition lies elsewhere in the NFC. San Francisco added wide receiver Mike Evans to an offense in need of star power to push themselves over the top. Evans will do just that, ensuring the 49ers offense is once again a dominating force.

San Francisco was very close last season. Their defense, once again under Robert Saleh, made huge improvements, so its fair to wonder if the unit will step back again this year because Saleh has again departed. No worries, because the offense is making moves. Mike Evans solves this potential problem.
Christian McCaffrey is the cornerstone of the 49ers offense, but he is truly successful because QB Brock Purdy is excellent and the San Francisco passing game has been worthy of a defense’s attention. Last year the offense took a step back and it lost the wide receiver presence it once had. Tight End George Kittle can still be an excellent receiver, but not when he is the primary target. Evans fixes all of this and more.

Not only is Evans really good, he’s an all-time great. That said, we don’t know if he can put up the same numbers he once did. Thankfully, the 49ers won’t be asking him to. Evans only needs to be Purdy’s best receiving option, which he is. This opens up the offense to Kittle and McCaffrey. I also expect San Francisco to add one more receiver in the draft. All of this takes pressure off the defense, which will be adjusting under a new coordinator. I love this move so much, and hate how the Bucs let Evans go.
