Staying in Shape!

I’ve been in shape pretty much all my life. I played sports since I was five years old and have continued to be active ever since. But I went through a six month period of time in my adult life where I got out of shape due to illness. This was six years ago and I vividly remember the challenge. It took me months to get back into shape and I vowed never to go back. Staying in shape is way easier than the alternatives.

Getting back in shape was hard; it was physically and mentally challenging. I remembered where I’d been and it was extremely humbling to accept where my body was. I did not like it, so I worked and worked to change!

I’m always amazed at people who are constantly getting back in shape. We all have friends that are hardcore into exercise for a few months to a few years’ time, then drop it completely. Eventually they want to get back in the fitness game, so they go hardcore all over again. More common are those friends who workout a lot over a few weeks, then take a few months off. The cycle continues on and on forever.

Stop the unhealthy cycle and stop punishing yourself by staying in shape once and for all. It starts with dedication. It’s easy to say you don’t have the dedication for this, but we all do kids! Begin with smaller, achievable goals. Set an intention to exercise a minimum of three times a week. Pick any three days; that’s super easy!

At the beginning of the week decide what days you will workout. When I first started hitting the gym I’d workout Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Pick three days and stick to those days. Trust me, before long you’ll be adding in more like Wednesdays and Fridays. Exercise is addicting, so let it grab you. For a long time I was strictly a gym girl, then my eyes were opened to the wonders of outdoor exercise. I started running outside and was hooked! Give in to the temptation.

Now that you’re dedicated to a weekly three to five day fitness schedule, how do you make things more fun and part of your everyday life? Get active on the weekends with your friends and family! This is very easy to do if you’re single, and yes I know it gets harder as you have children, BUT if you start hiking and riding your bike on the weekends now, you’ll make it a habit. Habits are much harder to break, once formed, and you’ll pass this great habit along to your kids.

The same goes with your daily workout schedule. Once you make it a habit, something you do every day like eating, sleeping, and showering, you’ll always stay in shape. You won’t know any other way and it will never feel like a chore again. It becomes something you do and enjoy doing.

It only takes 2-3 weeks to get out of shape kids! Yep, that’s it. The longer you go, the tougher it is to get back into shape. So get on a workout schedule, make it a habit, and plan your exercise. Don’t forget to make it fun! Know what days you’re going to run, strength train, and hit up a fitness class. Planning those out will help keep variety in your workouts, keep you on your toes, and help you look forward to fitness!

Make your fitness regime apart of your daily life just like eating and sleeping. Staying in shape becomes easy and fun. Once your daily fitness routine is something you can’t live without, you’ll never go without it!
