New York Giants and Jets: NFL Week 18

1. What is the New York Giants Draft Outlook?
Todd Salem: A couple weeks back, we speculated what would happen if the Giants ended up with the first pick in the draft. After losing the tanking battle (i.e. winning the game) against Las Vegas in Week 17, that is no longer an option for Big Blue. The Giants are currently holding the number two pick in the draft with one game to play and cannot move up past Las Vegas, since they hold that head-to-head win. Two is the highest New York can go, but it can still fall further.
This week, they face Dallas, who is also out of the playoff picture and may resort to resting players. A loss for New York may allow them to stick in that two slot, though I’m not sure how the strength-of-schedule tiebreakers would shift after a slew of outcomes. There are four teams with three wins apiece, and two more with four wins. That means the Giants, with a loss, are guaranteed a top-five pick. With a win, they are still guaranteed a top-seven pick.

That sounds okay, though a far cry from the number one overall selection they had prior to this past Sunday. Dropping outside the top three would be pretty bad for this team’s rebuilding effort. They need a difference-maker, though not at quarterback. Which means, they want to slot into, at the very least, the first non-QB position. With this draft class, that appears to be the third selection.
Obviously, it is very early in the process. Even as we approach actual draft time, it is hard to know who will be drafted when. But early prognostications seem to think there are only two QBs worthy of being taken early (Fernando Mendoza and Dante Moore) and no one at another position good enough to vault that value play. That means the third pick is the team who gets their choice of everyone else. (If Moore returns to school, that throws a wrinkle into the whole discussion.)

If New York wins in Week 18 and drops out of that top three, I won’t be heartbroken. It is not ideal for 2026 and beyond, but it will probably mean Jaxson Dart has another good game and continues to develop. It may be that Abdul Carter does the same. There are results beyond draft pick slotting at work for the Giants that other teams may not be able to plausibly claim. If you want to argue that would be me just talking myself into a draft slide, so be it. I do grant you that having the first overall pick and not needing a QB would have been so much fun. Alas…
Dan Salem: We always knew the New York Giants had too much talent to land the number one pick in the 2026 draft, so what is their true draft outlook? It would be a shocking turn of misfortune for them to end up with anything less than a top five pick. I believe New York lands pick four, which puts them in the same position as last year. They must wait and see.
Supposing that both of the ‘top’ quarterbacks enter the draft and are selected within the top three picks, the Giants are left to see which one player is taken before they get to pick. Lucky for New York, they have many holes to fill, especially on defense.

I’m never one to root against my team to win, nor give a rat’s behind about which top ten pick my team ends up with. Drafting within the top ten means it won’t cost a lot to move up and you can get a lot to move back. It’s the ideal position for a rebuilding team, no matter which pick you have outside the top two. That being the case, the New York Giants have a bright and shiny outlook for the upcoming draft. It should be hard for them to mess it up.

2. What is the New York Jets Draft Outlook?
Todd Salem: One of those teams tied with the Giants at 3-13 is indeed the New York Jets. The Jets went hard into draft mode in Week 17; in other words, they got their doors blown off by New England and now are in position to grab a top five pick.
Week 18 will see them face Buffalo. The Bills are not able to catch NE for the AFC East title but are already locked into a wildcard, so they can only vacillate between the 5th and 7th seeds in the playoffs. That’s not a lot to play for, but it’s something. The Jets will not be gifted a win, and I’m sure management is perfectly fine with that!

Much like the Giants, a loss would bring seeding down to strength-of-schedule tiebreakers, assuming any of the other 3-loss teams also lost. Tennessee is unlikely to win, facing Jacksonville still fighting for a scenario to capture the number-one seed. Arizona plays the Rams, also vying for playoff positioning but already locked into making it. We don’t know for sure what will happen; that’s why they play the games! But in all likelihood, every one of these clubs loses except the Giants. They have the best chance to win.
The Jets are hoping to move up to two, right? They desperately want a top-two pick to be guaranteed one of the two elite QBs (if both enter the draft). But if they remain at three, what is New York’s move? They could spend draft capital to move up, but it could be costly because of the framework we just outlined. They could also build up the rest of their roster and wait until (a supposedly loaded) 2027 quarterback class. Both options feel incredibly risky. The Jets need to lose in Week 18 perhaps more than anyone else in this discussion. Would you be able to take anything positive away from a Week 18 upset win at Buffalo?

Dan Salem: Across the hallway sit the New York Jets, with an equally bright and shiny outlook for the upcoming draft. It will be hard for the Jets to mess it up, because they not only have their own top ten draft pick, but also multiple picks from Indianapolis and Dallas, two non playoff teams.
I believe New York ends up with pick five or six, which positions them to move up for one of the two quarterbacks if desired. It also allows them to simply get a great player and sign a veteran quarterback. Considering how bad the Jets defense has been this year, there are no wrong moves to be made.

Is there any way the Jets can sign and trade Breece Hall to the Titans for the top pick? Hall is like a young Tony Pollard with a bit more speed and Tennessee does not need a quarterback. We must consider all options for New York, because the team is going nowhere without a quarterback.
