My solution to snacking!

I have a tiny secret. I like to snack, I admit it! Woo! I feel liberated getting that out there.  I love a good plate of cheese and crackers, especially brie.  A handful of pretzels are my weakness and be careful if you put me in front of a bowl of peanut M&M’s.  And don’t get me started on chips, specifically Doritos.  There’s a reason you can’t eat just one! I came to terms with being a snacker and knew I had to change things. My snacking ways were holding me back so I worked hard to stop myself, only to slowly fall back into the same old habits.  Damn it! Bring on the health revolution, no more self sabotaging and no more being a snacker. I taught myself to enjoy a single snack, just a cracker or just two peanut M&M’s, but knew I needed a better way to keep myself on track and living healthy. Now I use a magical little APP called Myfitnesspal!

Myfitnesspal is a calorie counting app, but it rocks.  WAIT! Don’t stop reading; I’m not advocating calorie counting, so stay with me here.  I use the APP to keep myself accountable for what I’m eating.  Who cares about the calories specifically? The APP helps me not mindlessly snack when I’m not even hungry! How? Because I know if I eat something I need to record it. It will give you a gigantic wake up call to what you’re eating.

Here’s how it works.  You add in your weight and decide whether you want to lose or maintain.  No pressure either way, just personal. The APP then gives you what your daily goals for calories, fats, etc. are! You can add your own recipes in, save a combo of items as a ‘meal’ to have again later and separately add in the foods and drinks you consume. Plus it has an array of restaurant meals already added for when you go out.  A crazy thing happens rather quickly though. You realize that the allotted calories they suggest you eat add up super fast! And if you don’t workout, you’ll be sorry when your 1200-1500 calories are almost eaten by 3pm. But its okay! This APP is telling you two super important things; first, you’re eating more than you need. Trust me, you are.  Second, you need to exercise.  What a compliment to your health revolution. It’s joyful to see that you burned 413 calories on a run and have those extra calories now to go toward food.  You won’t ever go over your calories once you add in the exercise!

Myfitnesspal holds you accountable.  It keeps you eating serving sizes and not over indulging.  And it’s KILLED my snacking ways. It’ll make you think whether you actually want that cookie that surprisingly is 250 calories, or if you’d rather go for an apple that is just 80 calories.  For all the exercise and healthy eating I do, I can admit that it’s hard not to fall off the wagon every now and again.  But we don’t want to and Myfitnesspal helps. I feel healthier, more confident and I’ve already lost those nagging five pounds that were killing my confidence. I’m more aware of what I’m eating and eating less because of it.

If you hold yourself accountable for what you’re eating, you’ll feel amazing about you! You can’t lie to yourself and reach your fitness goals, so join my health revolution.  Be aware of what you’re eating and feel invigorated! Keep yourself motivated and accountable.  Try out Myfitnesspal! And the next time you’re having ice cream you’ll think twice about that second helping.

Hey Mandi…I’ve been readin gyour stuff for a while now, but nothing made me act as quickly as this post did. After I read it, I immediatly dowloaded the app and I am on my way. Not like I need to lose weight, I just love the idea of keeping track of things I eat! Is there an APP for Sugar intake? (i’m sure there is!) Ciao for now! John
