Cheese sauce is one of my favorite things ever because it oozes with deliciousness and adds such flavor to foods. I’m not talking about movie theater nacho cheese sauce. Heck no! I’m talking homemade, top grade, piping hot and delicious. The best dang cheese sauce EVER!
This is hands down the best dang cheese sauce ever! I dare you to make a better one and welcome the competition. My sauce is so simple and can be used in so many different dishes. I make this with dairy cheese, as well as plant based cheese, and both are mouthwatering. You can even turn it into the most delicious Queso ever. Whatever your fancy, this remains the best dang cheese sauce!
What exactly makes this sauce the best? Its taste speaks for itself, but its also amazing because of how accessible it is to prepare. It doesn’t take long to make, only ten minutes, and it’s super versatile. Top it on pasta to make a great mac n cheese, use it as a dipping sauce for french fries, a sauce for baked potatoes, or on your veggie cheese burger. Anything that you like to dip, slather, and eat with cheese is perfect for this sauce.
Even though this cheese sauce is quick to make, you want to make sure that you focus on preparing it. Do nothing else while making it, or risk ruining the sauce. Trust me, those ten minutes of devotion are worth it. You don’t want to overcook any of the ingredients and you want to make sure your timing is perfect. I know from experience that its easy to burn your cheese, so learn from my mistakes and focus.

Here is the secret to preparing my sauce. Start by melting your butter and you want it to just slightly start to sizzle. This is when you add your flour and stir it in. Then you add your milk. Regardless of whether I’m using plant based cheese or dairy cheese, I always use vegan butter and unsweetened non-dairy milk. Bring your mixture to a nice boil. You want it to really boil first, then you add your cheese and stir vigorously. Once you’ve stirred, lower the heat and your cheese sauce should be nice and solidified.
If you want your cheese sauce to be thicker, then simply add more cheese. If you prefer it to be a bit looser, then add more milk. Have fun and experiment! You can totally add salsa to this and boom, you have a delicious Queso! Remember to lower the heat once you’ve added the cheese, as well as periodically stir it if you’re not ready to serve. Don’t make this in advance, because you want it to be hot, gooey, and right off the stove top.
Best Dang Cheese Sauce
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 5 minutes
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yields: 1/2 cup to 1 cup of cheesy goodness
- 2 tablespoons vegan butter (Earth Balance)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened nondairy milk (Almond milk)
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1/2 cup cheddar cheese (dairy or plant based)
- Garlic powder (optional)
- Melt your butter in a sauce pan over medium heat.
- Add in your flour and stir. Then add in any seasonings you desire, such as garlic powder, and stir.
- Add your nondairy milk and bring the mixture to a nice boil.
- Reduce the heat to low and add in your cheese, making sure you stir it thoroughly.
- If you’re not ready to serve, then lower the heat to a simmer and keep it warm. Otherwise, serve your sauce hot and add it to pasta, or whatever dish you’re using this delicious cheese sauce for!
Remember, if you want a larger serving, then double the proportions of cheese and milk. You can also use more butter and flour, but I find that at most double your butter and flour. You don’t need to go overboard, even if you’re going to use a lot more milk and cheese. Enjoy!
