New York Giants Playing With Fire in 2026
Will everything go right, or terribly wrong for the New York Giants in 2026? There’s so much to love about the Giants, but this team is playing with fire.

As we discussed last week, the possible outcomes for the New York Jets in 2026 range from playoff team to worst team in the league, but the most likely outcome is a ho-hum, third-place finish in the East. Across town, the New York Giants are in a similar boat.

The overwhelmingly most likely outcome is a third-place finish in the NFC East, behind Philadelphia and Dallas. New York could also fall to last pretty easily if Washington gets a rebound/healthy season from Jayden Daniels. That is the most likely outcome, but what about best-case and worst-case outcomes for Big Blue?

Todd Salem: Sky High Possibilities
It might just be me, but best case feels sky high. It doesn’t have to be specific to the East division, but I think a best-case Giants team can win the NFC East. That factors in a likely backslide from the Philadelphia offense, as well as questions around health and defense in Dallas. But for New York specifically, there is major upside…everywhere.
We know about Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, and Malik Nabers on offense. The Giants also have one of the best offensive tackle tandems in the conference in Andrew Thomas and Jermaine Eluemunor. The interior of the line is a weakness, but it’s the best weakness to have if you’re going to have one, and rookie Francis Mauigoa could cinch that problem right up from Week 1. Tight end was upgraded this offseason, as was the depth at wide receiver. A lot has to go right (which happens in the best cases), but the offense could be really, really good.

The defense could also be really, really good, and it’s even more obvious why! They have one of the best pass rushes in football, added the best defensive prospect in the NFL Draft, signed a Pro Bowl linebacker, and multiple pieces in the secondary.
On top of all that, New York hired one of the best coaches of the past decade in John Harbaugh. He brings a seriousness and feeling of contention to the organization. Before, it felt like we had to catch lightning in a bottle to contend; now it feels like we should be contending if everyone just did what he said!

Obviously, everything isn’t going to go exactly how I or Harbaugh wants it to. What if nothing goes right? Worst-case scenario hinges a lot on injury. Everyone important on offense has an injury stigma from Dart to Skattebo to Nabers to Thomas. They could all go down, leaving the offense in tatters. On defense, if Arvell Reese doesn’t take to NFL linebacker, the back seven could struggle. There are already questions about who is even going to start at either cornerback spot. The pass rush should still be good, but we saw last year, that isn’t enough to carry the team.
A dismantled offense and terrible defense would easily challenge the Jets for first pick in the draft. The Jets had a wide berth between best- and worst-case scenarios, and somehow, in my opinion, the Giants’ is even wider!

Dan Salem: Playing With Fire
The New York Giants have a higher floor but an equally low ceiling as the cross-town Jets. Based solely on Harbaugh’s experience, it’s hard to imagine the Giants being as bad as they were last year. Plus, they have so much talent that he is bound to use it effectively. That being said, the NFC is full of contenders and it’s equally hard for me to imagine New York being anything better than a wildcard playoff team this year.

Harbaugh chose New York because he likely saw how he could recreate his Baltimore success. This bodes very well for Dart, who can run well and is a solid passer. But what the Giants must find early on is a reliable running back, because without one the offense isn’t going anywhere. Because so many of New York’s top offensive weapons from last year are coming off of an injury, we simply do not know how soon they will return to the high level we previously saw. In a perfect world everyone comes back to 100% at the start of the season and this offense is clicking. That offense makes these Giants a playoff team.
Dart has the weapons and confidence to lead a winning team. I don’t envision the Giants putting up 25+ points a game, but they shouldn’t have to. Their defensive line is set up to be the best in all of football, meaning they only need passable improvement from the secondary to truly hold teams in check. New York has a tough schedule and many injury concerns, but ten wins is a real possibility so long as the secondary is better and the offense finds its running game.

As you noted, the floor for the Giants is low, nearly as low as for the Jets. Regardless of how fast the offense gets fully healthy and finds its mojo, if the defensive secondary is anything like last year’s unit, this team is in trouble. New York could not hold a lead last season. When opponents upped the pressure on defense, the Giants stalled on offense. When opponents went pass-happy on offense to catch up, the Giants completely caved on defense. An inability to hold a lead is worse than failing to catch up from a deficit. Letting your lead slip away more than twice kills all positive momentum. That is what faces New York yet again, but it feels unlikely to come to that this year.
