New York Giants Are The Kings Of Settling

The sixth pick is supposed to be great, but the New York Giants will be forced to settle. Good thing they are masters at it, but what does it mean for the rebuild?

Since we are all somewhat in agreement on who is going to be selected with the first five picks in the NFL Draft this month, the sixth pick is where things get tricky. The New York Giants will be on the clock at six (barring a trade) and have a lot of needs.

Fortuitously for them, a lot of their needs align with the best asset pools of this draft class. New York needs endless help at offensive line, wide receiver, and cornerback, three elite positions for this class. Interestingly, the Giants have one additional area in need of help, and that is quarterback.

The front office finally seems to think that they blew it with the Jones extension and do not feel he is the franchise quarterback they are paying him to be. What makes this tricky in 2024 is that Jones is definitely going to be around and paid handsomely, and the team is in no hurry to push him out the door. BUT, they may be ready to push him out by 2025, in which case drafting his replacement is an immediate need.

So, where does that leave New York at pick six? If we assume the first five picks are some combination of the top three quarterbacks, the top wide receiver, and the top offensive lineman, the Giants are in both an envious and yet precarious spot. Its time to settle.

Todd Salem: Giants Making Me Nervous

On the one hand, New York is gifted with its choice of a number of areas of need. They can draft the second-best wide receiver, who many people believe will be great in the NFL. They can draft the second-best offensive lineman, where the team still needs help. They can also draft the best of the tier-two QBs.

But in these options, we see the issue New York has. No matter the direction they turn, the Giants are left with…leftovers at each position. They do not get their choice of WR; they have to settle for whomever Arizona doesn’t want. Maybe they still love that number-two guy, but what if they don’t? Likewise, they do not get their choice of OT; they have to settle for whomever Los Angeles doesn’t want. Again, maybe they still love that number-two guy, but what if they don’t?

And at the all-important QB spot, they miss out on the entire top tier of prospects and have to settle for the fourth guy. That’s fine maybe at the top of round two, but at six overall?

Obviously, we do not know for certain who will be taken with picks one through five. It changes the math if LA, for example, takes Malik Nabers, and the Giants do want to go with OT. That gives them the choice of the positional group. But in the most likely scenario we have outlined in the top five, it leaves the Giants with no option but to settle at every turn.

Do you see this as being as big of an issue as me? And whether it is or isn’t, in which direction does New York turn?

My gut is that drafting the fourth QB is a smokescreen, and this team will take the second WR off the board. I am hoping this is Rome Odunze, but we’ll see. That still allows the organization to target a day-two QB or grab someone even later than that to back up Jones. Or, maybe giving off the vibe that they no longer believe in Jones long-term is the actual misdirection. If they build up the offense around him and give him another year to prove himself, the team could be better off for it. I don’t believe this to be true, but boy would it make it all much simpler if Jones just flat-out proves he can lead a team to postseason success with a better supporting cast.

Dan Salem: All According To Plan In New York

To be fair, the New York Giants are quite familiar with settling. They settled for Jones as their number one quarterback, then settled for a mid-tier replacement to Saquon Barkley at running back. Luckily for New York, all of this settling has made them an above average team when healthy, one that made the playoffs the last time Jones was their season-long starter.

We all know the Giants are rebuilding, yet the team is not truly in a position to rebuild. Their defense is quite good and they have a high-priced quarterback entering another prove-it season. The last time Jones was in prove-it mode, he led his team to the playoffs. Add in the fact that New York already has four quarterbacks on its roster, and we can all but eliminate that option from the entire draft.

Tommy DeVito is the young kid at quarterback learning on the bench. Heck, he proved he’s viable on the field last season, but there’s no reason to hand the team to him with Jones and his contract. Patience is certainly Brian Daboll’s virtue. New York must settle with pick six, but since three quarterbacks are going in the top five, it’s actually like the Giants are picking third. Marvin Harrison Jr. is not dropping, so I don’t see a problem here.

New York is going to select an offensive lineman, if for no other reason than they completely whiffed the last time they chose a wide receiver. Kadarius Toney, ahem, move on. They get one of the top lineman and there are at least three or four of them this year to pick from. Above average quarterbacks with lackluster weapons on offense can thrive and often dominate with very good offensive lines. I would say this is how Baltimore has been so good for so many seasons. Their QB is often elite, but the rest of the offense thrives because Lamar Jackson has time to work. Give Jones time and the Giants will be sniffing a winning record once again. Considering the team is rebuilding, this is quite excellent news.
