Amid fierce competition, the New York Giants have secured two excellent coaches to run their offense and defense. It was the best case scenario.

With the Seattle Seahawks takedown of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, we have officially entered the offseason. There will be time to cover all the new coaching hires around the sport, projections for the upcoming draft, predictions for 2026, and so forth. But we must start by backtracking to who the New York Giants and Jets hired to support their head coaches next year and (hopefully) beyond. Let’s start with the Giants and tackle the Jets next week.
After hiring John Harbaugh as head coach, the Giants’ hire of defensive coordinator would be important but not nearly as vital as the hire on the other side of the ball. New York picked the former first, tabbing Dennard Wilson as the next DC for NY.

Wilson knew Harbaugh from his brief stint as Baltimore’s defensive backs coach in 2023. He then spent two seasons as Tennessee’s DC before being scooped up here. The Titans had a reputation of overachieving their talent level on the defensive side, so that speaks to Wilson’s acumen. Previously being a defensive backs coach also will surely help the Giants improve that area of weakness.
All in all this seems like a good hire, though nothing ground-breaking. On offense is where things look interesting. Saddled with the responsibility of tutoring and helping to grow Jaxson Dart will be Matt Nagy. Nagy has a history in this league. He ultimately failed as head coach with the Chicago Bears before catching on for his second stint as offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs. Interestingly, though, KC’s offense is famously run by Andy Reid, not the team’s OC. And after this past season, the Chiefs voluntarily decided to part ways with Nagy before the Giants even interviewed him.

What More Could We Have Hoped For?
Todd Salem: I am torn on these hires. On the one hand, I love when teams hire former head coaches as coordinators. Those guys have a full view of how to run a team, yet can focus on their specialty which, more often than not, was good enough to get them hired as a head man to begin with.
Secondly, I like that the Giants went the veteran route with OC this time specifically. Finding the young, up-and-coming OC is great and all, but I don’t want that guy learning on the job while also trying to teach Dart to do the same thing. I wanted a veteran on the offensive side of the ball.

And third, the Giants also brought in Harbaugh-favorite Greg Roman as senior offensive assistant. Roman is a running-game whiz who would have been an underwhelming choice as OC but should be spectacular in this role.
Then there’s the other hand with Nagy. He crashed and burned in Chicago, failing to develop Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields. He was added to the KC staff during this team’s worst season in quite some time. He also wasn’t relied on to call plays, one of the main tasks of an offensive coordinator. I don’t know what to make of his second time with the Chiefs other than Reid must like him, which is kind of good.

I think the Nagy hire may fall into a similar categorization as Wilson, ironically. They are both possibly good hires but not ground-breaking, they just went different routes to get there.

Nothing Better Than Experience
Dan Salem: If Harbaugh can’t put together a great coaching staff, then nobody can. Furthermore, for a bottom dweller, the Giants roster was probably the most appealing on the market. One would think those two things would land them some of the best available coordinators out there.
Two things have been working against New York this offseason and both were out of their control. The first is that they can only hire coordinators who are looking for a job. No duh. The second is that multiple winning teams were in the market for new head coaches, meaning new coordinators too. The competition to hire has been fiercer than ever. Despite all of that, New York has done well due to Harbaugh’s pedigree.

I like the Nagy hire a lot, because experience on the sidelines is always a good thing. It’s especially good for a losing team who wants to vault into the winner’s circle. Both Harbaugh and Nagy have won a Super Bowl, which immediately wins respect. Dart can certainly learn a lot from a man who previously ran Patrick Mahomes’ offense. Considering the coaches available, Nagy is a great get for the Giants.
The same is true on defense. Since Harbaugh is a defensive guy, this hire holds less weight, but Wilson is still an impactful add. He previously worked with the head coach, which is great, and succeeded in Tennessee, which is also great. Wilson also specializes in New York’s former defensive weakness, the secondary.
