Just because the New York Giants gave you false hope only to destroy it, doesn’t mean this season isn’t a huge success. Not so for the Jets. Week 8 here we come!

Bad teams find ways to lose, so its no surprise the floundering continues for our New York Giants and Jets. Consider us numb to this pain. This is our New York football hour for NFL week 8 and both teams have shown their true colors once and for all. One has fun rookies at least, while the other is once again facing a quarterback conundrum.

We are faced with the truth that none of us want to accept. The only way through is through, so let’s feel everything and bite the proverbial bullets. Literally everyone is asking, outsiders are laughing or averting their eyes, but someone must step up to the podium and fire back. Tough questions require hard answers.

1. Was this the end of the Justin Fields ‘era’ for the New York Jets?

Todd Salem: Eras are normally longer than two months. Normally. Fields actually got off to a somewhat nice start to this season. In the past two weeks, though, things have taken a turn. The worst of all his tendencies have shined through, and the New York offense has been completely stonewalled.

Not for the first time this season, the coaching staff had so little confidence in Fields, they let the clock run out toward halftime rather than take a timeout and take a chance. Fields didn’t see the field in the second half. The offense simply had no chance of success with him at the helm. Last week, you could chalk it up to facing arguably the best defense in the league, in an international game. Those excuses are out the window now.

Tyrod Taylor isn’t the future answer of this club though. That person doesn’t currently exist on the roster. When comparing NYJ to the other worst teams in football, at least they have young pieces at quarterback. The Jets put that off for at least one year, essentially deeming this current season of no value if things didn’t work out at the QB position.

Is it worth going back to Fields for any reason? If not, is it worth letting Taylor play? Neither answer seems useful. At least the Browns could turn to Dillon Gabriel just to see if the young man has anything. The Jets don’t even have that luxury.

I expect the coaching staff will resort to playing the guy who gives them the best chance to win football games, future outlook be damned. Even if that is not immediately in Week 8, I also expect that to be Fields again at some point. I don’t think his time is over, even if the Jets’ hopes of scoring touchdowns is, with him behind center.

Dan Salem: I don’t believe Fields will play again for the Jets, simply because the offense with him running it is completely inept. He has not thrown an interception all season, yet it doesn’t matter. Taylor promptly tossed two picks against the Panthers after taking over as QB1, so it’s hard to argue that he is a better option. Simply put, the Jets have one viable wide receiver in Garrett Wilson, who was hurt last week and remains out until further notice. Try scoring TDs without a talented receiver. You can’t.

Because defenses don’t have to worry about anyone in the passing game, they can easily stop Breece Hall. Mason Taylor may be good, but the Jets lack anyone to throw him the ball. I’d love to tell you that a castoff like Daniel Jones would make a difference for this team, but I’m not sure that’s true. The Colts core wasn’t hugely different from New York’s, yet we both know Jones on these Jets would have failed. Something about this team is dysfunctional, beyond any single player’s ability.

I suppose in hindsight we see how the Jets were willing to punt this season, but every team needs their QB to play well. Fields has not, so he is done. Taylor as a starter is unlikely to survive more than two weeks, so I’m not sure what happens here. It’s very likely the Jets go winless and the top pick is practically a given for the 2026 draft. All we can do is hope that Aaron Glenn is following the Detroit Lions model. Purge the roster and bottom out in season one, then spring back to over achieve in year two. Detroit did win one game that first year.

2. Was this the last gasp of the New York Giants’ playoff hopes?

Todd Salem: I was considering throwing my first write-up in the trash and looking at this game from the point of view of the Denver Broncos instead. What can be said of the loser from what might be the worst loss in NFL history (strictly numbers-wise, not counting what was at stake)?

Even if they had won this game, it was unlikely the Giants would battle back into playoff positioning. The team had dug itself too much of a hole early on. However, the NFC East has been much more vulnerable than predicted this season, with all four teams owning a point differential of +16 or worse. None of the four are anything above mediocre at this point. As for the Giants specifically, this has felt like a different team with Jaxson Dart as the starter. That much is evident to any casual observer. The entire Giants are not challenging for the playoffs, but the Giants since Dart has taken over felt like they had an outside shot at least.

That is over and done with. Mathematically, it feels too improbable to come back from 2-5. More than that, emotionally, how does this team bounce back? The defensive coordinator put his playsheet in his back pocket and gave the game away; the kicker should be released by mid-week; Brian Daboll cannot be trusted moving forward. Even the fan-favorite run game couldn’t secure this all-but-guaranteed victory.

So, was this the last gasp of a playoff hope for this team? Obviously, yes. But more importantly, it may have been the last gasp for the entire regime trying to build around Dart.

Dan Salem: The Giants never truly had playoff hopes, because their rookie quarterback has already shown he’s going to make rookie mistakes. Plus, New York lost their top wide receiver and had to add a new one if they actually wanted to be a winning team. But I can see how such a demoralizing loss brings all of this team’s weaknesses into sharp focus.

These Giants are not good, but they are fun and will continue to surprise us with their streaks of dominant play. I was shocked to see the Giants man-handling the Broncos into the fourth quarter of last week’s game. New York’s offense isn’t good enough to dominate such a good defense as Denver’s. We also shouldn’t be shocked how the Giants gave away the game at the very end. They did so versus Dallas back in September. This team also gave the game away versus New Orleans. Three losses that coulda woulda shoulda been wins.

I fully expect these Giants to win six games and lose at least three more in a manner that leaves you screaming. Good teams win these close games, or at least have them even out over time. I’m not sure Denver is good, but these Giants are not good yet. Six wins and 3 to 6 super close losses will be enough to keep Daboll around. He’s doing all this minus his best player. New York is actually controlling games and nearly winning, as opposed to being humiliated. But most importantly, Dart is playing well and not the only reason they are losing. Hold your head up high. Just because this season gave you false hope, doesn’t mean it’s not a huge success.
