New York Giants and Jets: NFL Week 2

1. Is the Russ era ALREADY over for the New York Giants?
Todd Salem: Even though the team has announced that Russell Wilson will start again in Week 2, for all intents and purposes, is his era as starting QB already over? NO! His first shot was a disaster. Things were going to be tough regardless when Andrew Thomas was announced as out, but Wilson essentially gave this team nothing. He threw the ball 37 times, accumulating just 168 yards. But, in all honesty, it didn’t seem like a lot was his fault.
Wilson is known for holding the ball too long, but he actually didn’t even have time to hold the ball too long! He only took two sacks and made some nice scrambles. He is also known for slinging the ball down the field and avoiding quality options in the middle and underneath. He didn’t do that either. This game was about the offensive line being an abject failure, and Wilson suffering the consequences.

The running game did nothing to help, and though the Giants were only down one score for much of this game, the offense had no balance regardless. If the Wilson era is over, it’s because he was never going to succeed in the first place. I’ll grant that is a valid argument if you want to make it, but Week 1’s outcome doesn’t change my opinion.
Dan Salem: NO, it’s not, but the Giants are in BIG trouble. New York was grossly overmatched in week one, facing the Commanders who lost in the NFC Championship game last season. They are very good. The Giants were not and quite frankly, still are not that good. I was worried about their running game entering the year, but expected the offensive line to be solid. Wilson NEEDS the offensive line to be solid, because he’s an older player that NEEDS more time to throw. With Nabers likely receiving a double team most plays, more time is the only thing that will save New York’s offense.

Against weaker opponents I can see the Giants having more offensive success, but unfortunately their schedule does not let up very much EVER. The truly terrifying thing for fans is that rookie QB Jaxson Dart ALSO NEEDS more time in the pocket to throw the ball. Rookies make their reads slower because they are new and this game is faster, so Dart will need time like Wilson needs time.
Basically the Giants can’t put Dart out there until later, if this is how the offensive line is going to be playing. He will get humiliated, because even a potential hall of fame veteran QB struggled to do much behind this line. When everyone is supposed to be fresh and at their best, the Giants simply did not have it on offense. That was last season’s problem. If it remains the problem for another month, we may be saying goodbye to coach Daboll much sooner than expected.

2. Is the Week 1 performance a Net Positive or Net Negative for the New York Jets?
Todd Salem: We thought the Jets would have a good-to-stellar defense and lacking offense. In Week 1, the exact opposite was delivered. On the defensive side, Aaron Glenn and company played matchup with their best cover corner, Sauce Gardner, and attempted to piece together the rest. Gardner shadowed DK Metcalf and completely took him out of the game when playing direct man-to-man. Unfortunately, the rest of the defense wasn’t so competent.

However, there were things to like. There was constant pressure up front. The Pittsburgh run game never got anything sustained going either. It was really a case of Aaron Rodgers picking them apart.
On offense, all the talk of there being a running back controversy was put to rest. Breece Hall dominated the game in volume and production. Justin Fields, too, was good. He didn’t make mistakes to hurt the team and proved an asset on the ground as well. We need to see a second receiving option after Garrett Wilson, but this was a great first showing.

Overall, I lean net positive. The offense has work still to do, but we saw enough defensively where it isn’t anything I am panicking about.
Dan Salem: The Jets showed a lot of great things in week one and the outcome was certainly a net positive. New York won nearly every category on the stat sheet except the turnover margin. They lost by two points and missed two two-point conversions, which they felt were necessary due to a missed extra point. I knew these teams would be even, but I figured it would be defensively, not offensively. What a pleasant surprise!

Both the Jets and Steelers have very good defenses. Rodgers made literally zero mistakes and was super fresh. He did not move up and down the field at will on New York, but did more than enough to put his team in a position to kick the game winning 60 yard field goal. The Jets did not get any turnovers on defense, but slowed Rodgers enough to be leading the game with three minutes to go.
If not for an incredible strip fumble by the Steelers on a kickoff, we are talking about a Jets five point victory. Considering how low New York was last season and how the Steelers are ALWAYS a playoff team, BOTH teams looked like playoff teams in this game and I leave with a lot to like about the Jets. I saw the nine or ten win team I was hoping would show up for week one, but they likely lost a game that they needed to reach that victory total.
