Sexy, gory and revealing. The Substance exposes us for our deepest truth, then throws it in our face and points and laughs. This is a movie you can’t forget.
Our dark truth explodes in our face as Demi Moore faces inner and outer demons put upon her by society. The Substance is disturbed, but also eye opening. Its sexual and deviant, but also a gore fest aimed at revealing the horror of society’s creation in terms of women in particular. Everything about this movie is uncomfortably close and its beautiful.

You make think The Substance is set in the 1980’s, but its not. You may think the movie is about exploiting science for personal gain, but its not. Everything in this film is an allegory and an expose of our inner truth and desires, be they sexual or otherwise. Because our darkest truth is so raw and revealing, so is this movie.

This film is trippy and uncomfortable, but disturbing in the right way. Every shot is almost too close for comfort and we see way more of everything than imaginable. The Substance leaves me a bit speechless, but its a good thing. Let me know what you thought and check out my review video.
