The Holdovers is twisted and uncomfortable, but certainly a well done movie. I’m not sure I fully enjoyed it, because its pure ugly nostalgia.

 

I enjoyed The Holdovers movie, but its ugly and uncomfortable and off putting. The story is not particularly original, but the way its told certainly is. This is pure nostalgia, but the truth as opposed to our lovely memories. The rich are arrogant, the rest are resentful, and those in the middle all seem angry. Its definitely a unique and well done film, but The Holdovers left me totally unsettled.

We are once again in the 1970’s at a rich boarding school, but this time its Christmas and some people don’t get to leave. This is not a thriller, but a depressing and sort of uplifting story of redemption for one professor whom nobody likes. He doesn’t even like himself. The Holdovers packs a few too many punches, but that’s why its good. I don’t know if I liked it, but that was probably the point as well.

There are not any real flaws with this film, hence its Oscar worthy consideration. But its twisted and uncomfortable and full of ugly nostalgia. Was it my favorite movie of the year? No, The Holdovers was not. But I do think its well done and I understand the praise its receiving. There’s just something about it that rubs me the wrong way.
