You could focus on the rematch or the threepeat, but Carson Wentz is the real story. Kansas City’s backup QB in Super Bowl 59 has entered ultimate revenge mode.

The Kansas City Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl for the third straight season and the fifth time in the past six years. They held off fan-favorite Buffalo in the AFC Championship game to make it back to the ultimate game, Super Bowl 59. Good for them…
Facing them will be a familiar foe, the Philadelphia Eagles. Philadelphia easily dispatched Washington in the NFC title game to come up against Kansas City once again. The two teams met in Super Bowl 57, where the Chiefs won in a barn-burner. But, before you think this is a revenge game for the Eagles, there is another revenge looming in the background, and it has to do with our favorite position on the field. The backup quarterback!

For all the x-factors that will determine a victor, all the keys to the game that will unlock the path to success, there is one key that is a bigger x than any other factor. You would never have seen this coming if not for us shoving it in your face. Kansas City backup quarterback Carson Wentz. He has entered full revenge mode and WILL decide this game.
Super Bowl 59 Revenge Mode for Wentz

Todd Salem:
Wentz, once upon a time, was the franchise QB of the very same Philadelphia Eagles. He made the Pro Bowl and had an MVP-caliber season back in 2017, leading his squad to an 11-2 record before injury took him down. Wentz left his team set up for Super Bowl heights before being replaced by his own backup and ultimately saw that man take the Eagles to a championship win.
Now, against his old squad and fanbase that came to despise him, Wentz has the opportunity, nay, the destiny, to Nick-Foles Patrick Mahomes and win revenge over his old organization.

Ordinarily, I would say this outcome is unlikely or implausible. Mahomes has had a good offensive line in front of him and rarely gets hurt. He knows how to take hits (and fake hits!). Beyond that, this Chiefs team isn’t built to carry a backup like, for example, the Eagles would be. The strength of the team is Mahomes himself, and the defense, meaning it would be hard for any backup QB to find success with middling skill players around him.

All that being said, those are just analyses that lead to educated conclusions. We also have feelings, and the Wentz storyline feels like it has a 110 percent chance of happening. I don’t know what the betting line is on Mahomes getting hurt, being replaced by Wentz, and seeing Wentz lead KC to a Super Bowl victory, but it’s free money regardless of the odds.

Dan Salem:
You may be wondering, who is the backup quarterback for Philadelphia? Are we not comparing backups for Super Bowl 59? The Wentz revenge storyline is incredible and dare I say nearly as good as the threepeat storyline itself, but what about the Eagles? Lest we forget Kenny Pickett, former under performer for the Pittsburgh Steelers and current backup to Jalen Hurts. Yeah, we can forget about Pickett. Nothing to see there by a long shot.

Wentz versus Pickett doesn’t have the ring to it like Mahomes versus Hurts, but once upon a time it wasn’t outlandish to think they might both be great. Now that scenario would be even worse than the Super Bowl 59 rematch we are stuck with. The game is going to be epic, because these two teams are by far the best in their respective conferences. One could easily debate if the Buffalo Bills are superior to Philadelphia, but they lost to the defending champs with zero question as to who was the better team. Same for the Eagles, and truthfully only Detroit appeared on their level during the season, but they lost just like Buffalo with zero question as to who was the better team that day.
What’s the over/under on camera shots of Wentz on the sidelines, giving his stink eye to his old team across the field? Will we get enough Wentz during Super Bowl 59 to make a drinking game out of it? Based on the way both Kansas City and Philadelphia played in their respective conference championship games, I don’t think we have to worry if the unforeseen happens and their backups must come in and play. For the Eagles with Pickett, they obviously lose any real threat in the passing game, but they have a great defense and exceptional running attack. For the Chiefs with Wentz, they lose about the same in the passing game. Wentz is likely still a better passer than Pickett, but Mahomes means more to his team than Hurts does. Kansas City also has a great defense and showed a stellar running attack against Buffalo. This is a toss up with the backups in the game.

Assuming we actually get good football and Mahomes versus Hurts is our Super Bowl 59 matchup all the way through, then we MUST favor Wentz… I mean Mahomes. He is simply too good when it matters most. Hurts is great, but he hasn’t done what Mahomes keeps doing. This title game is Kansas City’s to lose, but don’t call it an upset because this is a revenge game and rematch like we’ve never seen before.
