Before the season started, if someone had to pick a chalk Super Bowl 58 matchup, a fine selection would have been Kansas City versus San Francisco. These were thought to be two of the four or five best teams in the league, no question. After it was all said and done, they both made the Super Bowl after all, but it felt like quite a different march to get there.

Some may call these teams lucky. Others will say they put on their playoff armor. But the bottom line is crystal clear, the Chiefs and 49ers are dynasties. San Francisco was a Brock Purdy injury away from making the Super Bowl last season. Kansas City has been to 4 of the last 5 Super Bowls, dating all the way back to their 2020 matchup against none other than… San Francisco. You may not like it today, but you’ll grow to enjoy it all the same. A dynasty war is upon us in Super Bowl 58.

Todd Salem: Its Always Been Kansas City
How did we end up at the inevitable? For Kansas City, the season involved people throwing dirt on their coffin. The offense was a mess even with Patrick Mahomes healthy all year. Travis Kelce lost a step and was no longer the game-breaker the team needed him to be. No one else stepped up until much later, when Rashee Rice became a go-to guy in the passing game.
Even with arguably the best defense of the Mahones era, it didn’t seem like this team was talented enough to make the run another time. Come playoff time, Kelce dialed things back to his former glory, and the Chiefs defeated everyone in their path. In the AFC Championship game, I thought Baltimore’s rushing offense would be the final straw, but the Ravens never got that attack going and were eliminated somewhat with a whimper. Lamar Jackson is going to win league MVP, but he still isn’t on Mahomes’ level.

In the NFC, a midseason swoon threw doubt into people’s minds regarding San Francisco’s ceiling. Major struggles from Brock Purdy only increased worry. This team didn’t have the elite defense we were used to, and if Purdy couldn’t generate positive plays, the team would be doomed.
In the first half of the NFC Championship, all that looked to be correct. Detroit did whatever it wanted on the ground, and Purdy made a couple costly mistakes. We prided Dan Campbell on his second-half adjustments during this postseason. In this one, he stuck with what got him there, and it backfired in a major way.
Purdy settled in, the 49ers took advantage of some Lions mistakes, and Campbell pushed the gamble button one too many times. It’s hard for me to criticize when that has been his style all along. Changing now would have generated more hate in the opposite direction if suddenly becoming conservative led to a collapse. But there’s no question it didn’t work out in this one.

In the end, do we get the best game Super Bowl matchup anyway? Detroit would have been more fun to have in the game, but all along, I thought San Francisco was more talented. In fact, all season, it was hard to argue with the 49ers being the most talented team in the league. Is that enough to win their first Super Bowl in 30 years?
My inclination is to say no. Purdy still worries me, and that worry intensifies against, again, the best defense of the Mahomes era in Kansas City. To make matters worse, the 49ers defense did get picked apart by Jared Goff and the Lions attack, after falling behind to Jordan Love and the Green Bay offense. What will happen if they can’t patch holes against Patrick freaking Mahomes?

Dan Salem: Chiefs Keep On Rolling
You read my mind, or merely stated the obvious. Regardless, when the Chiefs and 49ers face off in the Super Bowl, we will witness the BEST matchup one could have hoped for. Kansas City will win again, but that doesn’t make this any less fun. Dynasties are great for sports.
Kansas City proved something very important this season. They proved that the formula for success is fluid, but it works just the same. In addition, they validated what Tom Brady and the Patriots kept doing year after year. The Chiefs were good during the regular season, but never great. When the playoffs arrived, the switch was flipped and they dominated en route to reaching the Super Bowl. This is the only way to truly sustain a dynasty, and apparently it’s now a trend in the AFC.

San Francisco also proved something important this season. They proved Brock Purdy is legitimately good in their offensive system. The 49ers also proved that dominating with a great coach, quarterback, offensive weapon threesome is something the NFC is also allowed to accomplish. Brady, Belichick, and Gronkowski. Mahomes, Reid, and Kelce. Purdy, Shanahan, and McCaffrey. I would have listed Kittle, but he’s complimentary to the greatness that is CMC. San Francisco has been almost there for several seasons. Now they return to the Super Bowl.
So what of this matchup between the 49ers and Chiefs? It’s similar but different than five years ago, yet I don’t expect the outcome to change. There’s mojo and then there’s Taylor Swift mojo. Tell me I’m wrong?
