Being helpless to the vampire curse is the fatal flaw of Nosferatu, because giving in to the threat is not the same as fighting to stop it. Darkness wins.
Nosferatu is a more disturbing version of Dracula, but the movie makes one fatal mistake. The characters are all weak. They are helpless against the vampire and running scared throughout. While this makes sense, it also hurts the film. Ultimately giving in to the demon is the only way to stop it, which is very anticlimactic. I know Dracula intimately, having read the book, so there was no mystery here. Nosferatu is a very good story and definitely creepy, but it has no fight. That is what makes Dracula different. Every human fights bitterly and tries to rid the world of the vampire. We don’t get that with Nosferatu.

Making the damsel in distress our hero and savior is a nice change, but she doesn’t really do anything to win beyond giving herself up to the demon vampire. This doesn’t feel like courage or bravery in Nosferatu, but rather acceptance of one’s fate and the inevitability of death. Our Van Helsing character knows so little about the threat that its almost comical for him to be the expert. He can’t do anything to stop the vampire. It wants what it wants and it gets what it wants.

Because I know Dracula so well, this story felt like it intentionally came up short in trying to change things. Beyond changing all the names, every major story point is the same in Nosferatu. We simply get scared people, rather than strong willed fighters. Let me know what you thought, then check out my review video.
