1. Are the New York Jets actually just bad defensively?

Todd Salem: The Jets got dominated in all facets on Sunday versus Buffalo. The offense was certainly a mess and didn’t score a touchdown until mop-up time with Tyrod Taylor. However, we saw last week the scaffolding of how this offense can succeed, assuming Justin Fields is healthy. What we haven’t seen in two straight weeks now is the defense put up a fight.

This was supposed to be a defensive team, led by stars at each level and by a defense-first head coach. So what’s the deal? Buffalo is an elite offensive club, so losing to them isn’t a surprise by any means. But the way it happened was embarrassing. New York got run over to the tune of 224 yards on 5.2 yards per carry. Josh Allen never felt rushed or in trouble. The Bills offense got whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it.

Also on BuzzChomp: Who WILL BE the First Backup QB to start?

Is this just a case of a new regime taking time to implement schemes, or is something else going on? Quinnen Williams, Jermaine Johnson, and Will McDonald combined for zero quarterback hits and one tackle for loss. The Bills were 7-for-16 converting third and fourth downs.

This may sound silly, but I actually still believe in this group. The front generated a lot of pressure in Week 1, and it has only been two games for Aaron Glenn and company to mold this side of the ball, one of which came against arguably the best team in football. I’m not ready to give up on this defense yet.

Dan Salem: The Jets are NOT bad defensively, but they are most certainly an AVERAGE team. They got creamed by the elite Buffalo Bills, who are certainly a Super Bowl hopeful. It was a toss up game against Pittsburgh, who is also average and likely aiming for wildcard contention. But I’m not sure the Steelers are even good enough to sniff the playoffs, which puts New York thoroughly on the cusp of relevance, but also a step or two ahead of last season.

This team has A LOT of work to do, but growing pains with a new coaching staff are expected. Jets fans are probably the most unreasonable lot there is, so things won’t get easier. But fortunately for the Jets, both Miami and New England are not very good. This means New York can be competitive in the AFC East, outside of Buffalo who is in its own league. Playing Tampa Bay is the perfect middle ground test. The Bucs are good and a former playoff team, but they aren’t great. New York SHOULD play as good or better than week one, but now they have injuries to deal with. Bouncing back and keeping it a one score game means we have something here. Another blowout and the wheels fall off.

2. Was this a “Good” loss for the New York Giants?

Todd Salem: I am not normally one to hide behind such platitudes, but I actually think that yes, Week 2 was a good loss for New York. The Giants and Jets seem to be mirroring each other through two weeks, and NYG should feel good about how they performed most recently.

The Giants proved that they can give Russell Wilson enough time to do what he does best: chuck the ball down the field. Wilson was on it the entire game. He did still take some sacks and threw one pass up for grabs late, but this was the best version of Wilson in this offense.

Defensively, there were also things to like despite the high-scoring affair. The front put a lot of pressure on Dak Prescott, including seven QB hits and three sacks. That, again, is the best-case for this defense, with the front making things tough for the opposing quarterback.

Of course, not everything went New York’s way. The secondary got gashed even with Prescott feeling the heat all game. The team as a whole was also a mess with penalties on both sides of the ball. The latter can be cleaned up; the former, likely, cannot be. This was the biggest worry about the defense entering the season, and nothing has waived away those worries as of yet.

Dan Salem: The Giants notched a GOOD loss, but oh boy are they in trouble. I assumed Wilson would have one or two solid months in him, and against a bad Cowboys team he looked phenomenal. Unfortunately, the Giants could not stop Dallas on the opposing side of the ball. While the Jets lost a clean game to Pittsburgh, it’s easy to see how the Giants could have won if they simply were not sloppy. Lack of discipline speaks to coaching and a rollercoaster of a season.

With Wilson having a great game, the pressure is off Dart for another week. But the Giants were supposed to be good defensively. Dallas is pretty one dimensional, but shredded New York, especially in crunch time at the end of regulation. Holding a lead with 30 seconds left in the game usually means victory. Scoring more than 30 points usually means victory. Neither were true for the Giants and they STILL don’t have a consistent running game to work with. The silver lining is that we KNOW they can compete with teams on their level, yet half their division is playoff ready. The NFC is a lot tougher than the AFC (look how Seattle beat up Pittsburgh), so the Giants need to improve quickly to stay competitive.
