Quarterback Battles:

New York Giants – Middling (Todd) ; Hot and Heavy (Dan)
Dallas/Philadelphia/Washington – none

Todd Salem: We know Russell Wilson is going to be New York’s starter Week 1. He will probably hold the job for most, if not all, of the season. If things go terribly, which is possible considering the Giants’ deathly schedule, maybe the team turns to Jameis Winston just for the hell of it. But I can’t see them shoving everything on Jaxson Dart if the young man isn’t ready.

If you want to argue that a horrible schedule and a likely lost season is more reason to turn to Dart, I could buy that. But I bet Wilson still starts for at least 10 weeks in that scenario.

Dan Salem: The Giants currently have four quarterbacks, all of whom they have recently paid new money to keep or acquire. Their starter Wilson did not play a full season last year, so we don’t know if he still can at a medium level. There’s a rookie knocking on the door and the job is his when he’s ready. Plus, they also have the most fun backup in the league who everyone wants to watch play as the starter. DeVito is probably cut, but this is a VERY interesting scenario that Giants’ fans must hope becomes boring real fast.

Hot Seat Coach:

New York Giants – Scalding (Todd) ; Burning Your Tushie (Dan)
Philadelphia/Washington – none

Todd Salem: Even though the team just drafted their supposed quarterback of the future, Brian Daboll’s job is on the line in 2025. The team has scuffled since its unexpected success in year one of this regime. The organization keeps implying that the QB position held it back and the rest of the roster was good. With a veteran in the clubhouse, this needs to be the year they prove it, or someone else likely makes a decision on Dart and the future of the franchise.

Dan Salem: Daboll must show significant improvement in the wins column to keep his job and/or prove he is developing Dart into a great starter for the Giants. I’m not sure he can do one without the other and he may have to do both to keep his job. I’m not buying the “hardest schedule” nonsense, because that’s based on last season and strength of schedule is rarely accurate from September to December. New York has a decent team and Daboll must be good, or get lost.

Dallas Cowboys – Luke Warm (Dan) ; none (Todd)

Dan Salem: I realize this is the first season for their head coach, but if the Cowboys have a really bad start to the year and are behind New York at Halloween, I can see things heating up in the firing department. No one liked this hire, so losing could initiate another change. Key word ‘could.’

Division Favorite:

Philadelphia Eagles (Todd & Dan)

Todd Salem: This one is obvious. The Eagles just won the Super Bowl in dominant fashion and return all of their biggest names. The roster has seen its depth turn over, particularly on the defensive side, but stellar drafting has helped replace most shortcomings.

Dan Salem: Nobody but the Eagles is anywhere close to Super Bowl worthy, so Philly should win this division. But injuries always happen and things often change dramatically by Labor Day, and then again by October first. I expect a highly competitive division all season, not a runaway by the Eagles.

Dark Horse:

Dallas Cowboys (Todd Salem) – The Cowboys are the forgotten franchise despite being arguably the most famous NFL team. Last year was a complete failure that led to the end of the Mike McCarthy era. Dak Prescott returns healthy, with receiving weapons abound, blue-chip players across the roster, and a new head coach, albeit one who likely keeps things similar. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing for a team that has won a lot of games in recent seasons.

Washington Commanders (Dan Salem) – Yes they made a deep playoff run last year, but everyone sees them coming this season. It’s very hard to repeat that level of success, especially when it comes out of nowhere. The Commanders are my dark horse to win the division, because they need two things to happen that no one expects. They need to be just as good as last year, plus have something pull the Eagles back a peg or two. I’d be surprised if both things happen.

Last Place Team:

New York Giants (Todd Salem) – The Giants actually have quite a bit of talent for a last-place squad. The defense could be really good at all three levels. The offense has one elite receiver, one elite lineman, and possibly useful pieces elsewhere. However, the rest of the East projects to be pretty good, and NY has shortcomings at o-line and likely QB. Those spots alone are nearly impossible to overcome. Throw in the league’s toughest schedule and ’25 is going to be tough sledding.

Dallas Cowboys (Dan Salem) – New York is the easy answer, but I like their offseason way more than what the Cowboys have done. Does Dallas have a good defense all of a sudden? Did they find a running game? At least the Giants have the makings of both. I view both Dallas and New York as five to eight win teams, fighting against a hard reset while trying to win more. The Giants come out slightly ahead.

Number of Super Bowl Contenders:

One – Philadelphia Eagles (Todd & Dan)

Todd Salem: Washington doesn’t quite get there for me. They overachieved last season with an aging supporting cast (Zach Ertz, Austin Ekeler, Bobby Wagner) and brought in a number of additional aging veterans (Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil, Javon Kinlaw) to try to make up the slack. That rarely works out. Of course, this will all look stupid if Jayden Daniels gets even better, but I could see ’25 Washington mirroring ’24 Houston. A young star QB can only take a team so far.

Dan Salem: If my dark horse team manages to win the division, it won’t be because they became better than Philadelphia. The Eagles are poised to return to the playoffs and compete for another title. They will likely do just that. No one else is up to the task just yet.
