Then we have the Giants, who currently hold the number one pick in the upcoming NFL draft. This is our New York football hour for NFL week 15 and both teams are looking to the future, no matter how grey or gloomy it may be.

New York Jets and Giants: NFL Week 15

1. Does Brady Cook Have a Future with New York Jets?
Todd Salem: The first look wasn’t great. Tyrod Taylor left with a groin injury, and Cook entered for his first NFL action of his career. He was an undrafted free agent signing by New York, so not much was expected, and he struggled to find success.
It was an emergency fill-in without, I assume, getting any practice reps, so it’s hard to have expected much. But is there anything here for the future? The Jets are looking for any kind of spark they can find at the quarterback position.

Cook developed a bit of a rapport with Mason Taylor, which was great to see. He also dropped some nice throws in a bucket, albeit in garbage time, and suffered the consequences of a bunch of drops by his teammates. On the other hand, Cook left a number of throws short, didn’t push throws past the sticks on third downs, took a bunch of sacks, and generally seemed overwhelmed by the outing.
It’s to be expected. I don’t think he’s going to turn into a perennial starter, but gaining him reps could see if he could become a reliable backup in this league, which is a valuable commodity these days. Without another healthy option currently on roster, the Jets likely give Cook a full week and legit shot in Week 15 against a tough Jacksonville defense. If they don’t, that tells us everything we need to know about his future with this club.

Dan Salem: I mean, sure, why not? Brady Cook has about as much a chance as anyone to secure the New York Jets starting quarterback job. He may actually be pretty good too, but he’s got work to do in order to show it this season.
Forget last week, because Cook was the backup and not expected to start. The offensive gameplan was designed for Tyrod Taylor, not Cook, so he was at a disadvantage. Being a rookie, Cook’s gameplan should look much more like Drake Maye’s in the coming weeks. Lots of short, safe passes that allow him to minimize mistakes. The Jets have a very good running game and solid offensive line, so there’s opportunity here.

Hopefully they let Cook play out the season to see what he truly has. Expectations are super low, but he can certainly earn a spot on the team for next season. That would bode well for continuity and the impending addition of a new starting QB. While highly unlikely, we can’t rule out the possibility that Cook actually puts it all together over the final month. Anything is possible… sort of.

2. What would the New York Giants Do With the First Pick in the Draft?
Todd Salem: During an idle bye week, New York vaulted into last place in the NFL, i.e. the first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. That is because Tennessee won, and the Giants currently win the tiebreak (lose the tiebreak) to both 2-11 Tennessee and 2-11 Las Vegas.
There is, of course, a long way to go to determine who will indeed be selecting first in the draft. Along with those three 2-11 squads, there are another five teams sitting at 3-10. A lot can change these next few weeks.
But, imagining the Giants do finish the season with the league’s worst record, I do wonder what direction/approach they will take with the draft. As we know, the top of nearly all drafts is reserved for desperate teams hoping to acquire their future franchise quarterback. Presumably, the Giants don’t need to go that route (assuming new leadership actually believes in Jaxson Dart, which is no guarantee).

So, are you of the opinion a struggling team like NYG should draft the best player available, best player at position of most need, or trade back to someone trying to draft said QB?
If we go route one, the Giants likely end up with a defensive pass rusher which, surprisingly, they don’t really need. It’s actually pretty muddled at the top of mock drafts these days with multiple edge players, as well as tackles, receivers, and a safety. The Giants most certainly need a safety and receiver, so route two could be intriguing. Caleb Downs from Ohio State is the most sought after S, while a number of WRs litter the top half of mock boards.
The tricky part is that we all know how this works. The very top of nearly all boards is filled with quarterbacks; three of them to be precise. So would the Giants be better served to trade down and allow a team like the Raiders to move into the top spot? I say yes.

Trading back obviously nets more assets for New York, which is always good. With this year, though, it also seems like trading back a little bit could still net the Giants their favorite player. We don’t know specifically who that is, but with multiple receivers, Downs the safety, and multiple offensive tackles in the mix, there is surely a prospect they love who will be available a few picks later. It’s still early, but 2026 feels like a deepish top 10 with no one standing out as can’t-miss. It’s kind of the opposite of last season’s draft. That plays right into the hands of a team trading down.
Dan Salem: I fully expect the Giants to trade back from their top five pick to the later picks of the top ten. They get “their guy” while also acquiring more draft capital, but I do expect them to remain within the top ten. If, for some reason, New York finds itself with three or even four wins and a pick outside the top five, then they will stay put and select the best player available.
I’m ALWAYS of the belief that the best player available should be taken within the top 15 picks, because those guys are difference makers and hit 75% of the time. A great player, regardless of position, immediately makes the entire team better. The Giants did this last season and have zero regrets about Abdul Carter, or at least I assume they do.

Despite the upcoming change to the coaching staff, the Giants do appear to have a core in place. Adding another top tier player can easily put them into the playoff conversation, assuming they get the coaching hires done right. Best player available. Case closed.
