We’re split on who is the best, but ultimately the Dallas Cowboys need it more. They win the NFC East in 2024.

The NFC East is a division in flux. The Philadelphia Eagles took a dive off a cliff last year to finish out the season with questions surrounding their offense, their head coach, and the direction of the franchise. Will they right the ship in 2024, or continue to sink even farther?
The Dallas Cowboys, the team that ended up winning the East in 2023, has a number of its best players approaching the end of contracts with no clear plan for the future, as the roster enters a soft rebuild to save money elsewhere. Playing hardball with the starting quarterback, the team’s best offensive weapon, AND the best defensive weapon in the NFL all at the same time feels a tad foolhardy.

The Washington Commanders are turning the organization over to a first-year quarterback and new head coach. Add in the New York Giants who are treading water, and the NFC East is a mess. Dallas is fighting uphill, while the Commanders and Giants fight to stop falling down the hill. The Eagles sit somewhere else. Who wins this thing in 2024?
NFC East Division Preview

Todd Salem – Fly Eagles Fly
With a mess of teams around them in the NFC East, the New York Giants are softly lurking. With stability and a new influx of talent, this team is primed to make 2024 a big year. Unfortunately, a big year could realistically mean a top pick in the ’25 NFL Draft, because this could be one of the worst teams in football.
I don’t think of myself as a pessimist, but boy, could this team stink. Just the basics: one of the worst defenses in football, the worst secondary in the division, the worst offensive line in the division, one of the worst running games in football, arguably the worst quarterback in the division (obviously depending on how good Jayden Daniels is). Outside of the defensive line, Andrew Thomas, and Malik Nabers, the Giants are either questionable or already bad everywhere else.

That’s not to say they will finish a distant last this year. There’s no guarantee they’ll finish last at all. The NFC East feels as weak as it’s been in quite some time. I don’t have high expectations for Washington on either side of the ball and wouldn’t be surprised at all by another last-place finish for them. The difference is mentally, where the Commanders have already turned the corner on a rebuild, while New York is still ahead of the bend and can’t see what’s coming.
As has been the case for a few seasons running, it will come down to Dallas and Philadelphia. The Cowboys have stars at every level of offense and defense except the running back position, but they lack depth. They should have the best defense in the East if everyone stays relatively healthy. I’m not sure that’s enough to keep pace with what should be an electric Philly offense though.

The Eagles hit an almost inexplicable slide last year. All the pieces are still here for one of the scariest teams to play against, and that’s before they added Saquon Barkley to the fold. With new coordinators on both sides, it is hard to know exactly what to expect, but that is almost a good thing after the way ’23 finished. The front office didn’t want to create turmoil within the player base, but turning over new leaves on the coaching front is the easiest way to create change from within.

Dan Salem – Dallas Cowboys Must Win and Do
My feelings on the NFC East range from overly optimistic to utterly apocalyptic. I’m not as down on the New York Giants as most people. Giants fans like yourself seem to have chalked 2024 up to a lost season, likely setting expectations very low so you can enjoy yourself. Well played. New York will be better offensively with Daniel Jones and Nabers, even though they must adopt a new identity without Saquon Barkley. I don’t view their defense as terrible and as you noted, the competition within the division is questionable. The Giants likely finish a game or two better than last year, which is probably worse than truly sucking. But I don’t have them in last place.
Last place belongs to the Commanders who are truly rebuilding. Perhaps their rookie quarterback is great immediately, but more likely this is a tough season for a team turning itself over. Washington would benefit from another high draft pick, so there’s little to gain from fighting for mediocrity. The Commanders finish behind New York and it won’t be as close as you think.

That leaves the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, both holding Super Bowl aspirations. The Eagles will be good, but I’m not sure they will be better this season. Dallas is going to shift its offensive identity and Dak Prescott is in a prove-it season. That bodes very well for their offense. I like the Cowboys, lack of depth aside. Everyone on Dallas needs to be great this season for monetary reasons. The Eagles feel like they are running it back, but each time they do something is lost a little bit. The Cowboys hold the edge.
My thoughts are based on everyone remaining healthy, but that never happens. There isn’t much separating the Cowboys and Eagles, so an injury will truly shift the balance of power. New York will crumble to dust if it has another significant injury like last year. Only Philadelphia can likely weather a significant injury storm, but I’m hoping everyone stays healthy.
