They may have won, but what if anything can the New York Jets build from? Now the Giants also lack a clear plan for the season. Reality check.

Reality check. Neither the New York Jets or Giants have a real plan for the rest of this season. A Jets win was tremendous, but too little too late. The Giants keep falling down hill. This is our New York football hour for NFL week 9 and both teams have shown their true colors once and for all. One has fun rookies at least, or had them prior to injury, while the other is tasting sweet sweet victory for two whole weeks.

We are faced with the truth that none of us want to accept. The only way through is through, so let’s feel everything and bite the proverbial bullets. Literally everyone is asking, outsiders are laughing or averting their eyes, but someone must step up to the podium and fire back. Tough questions require hard answers.
New York Giants and Jets: NFL Week 9

1. What can the New York Jets replicate to keep the wins coming?
Todd Salem: Forced into the starting lineup thanks to Tyrod Taylor’s injury, Justin Fields was given a second (sixth?) chance to prove he can lead an offense. At every turn, the Jets were down multiple scores in this game. They couldn’t keep Cincinnati out of the endzone. And yet, it’s a great sign that a Fields-led offense was able to make that comeback. The Jets won the fourth quarter 23-7 and the game 39-38. It took a gutsy two-point conversion and iffy running-back throw to complete the comeback, though how gutsy is it really when all that’s at stake is an 0-7 team falling to 0-8?
The coaches need to find something to take away from this win, to replicate in future weeks.
It wasn’t anything on defense. The Jets defense got shredded: picked apart through the air and run over on the ground. The Bengals, after all, got to 38 points without the benefit of a single turnover or long return. The d-line also got very little pressure on Joe Flacco, allowing him to sit back and wait for Ja’Marr Chase to get open.

What needs to be replicated is the effectiveness of the offense. But what actually was that? Fields was good/solid. He hit a number of quality completions over the course of the game. However, it was really the running game that did all the heavy lifting. Is gaining 6.9 yards per carry on 37 carries a plan to replicate? I mean, that was mostly thanks to Cincinnati. They probably had more say in that than even the Jets.
You have to credit Aaron Glenn and the coaches for not abandoning the run, even trailing by double digits for so long. Being stubborn isn’t a building block though. It can be helpful, but it isn’t a secret to success.

I don’t know. I kind of feel bad for the Jets in this way. They won a game that involved multiple comebacks and required toughness, moxie, and aggression. It’s a great win for sure…but it doesn’t give them anything to build off of moving forward unless they can manipulate the schedule to only face bad run defenses.
Dan Salem: Your answer to this question is the epitome of why all Jets’ fans feel like this is the worst season in our lifetimes, last week included more or less. The team does not have a plan for this season. Even in victory, there is nothing more than confidence to build off of, because the defense was awful and the offense was one dimensional. Those are the obvious negatives for a team full of them this season.
I’m a positive guy and this game was huge for myself as a fan and for the New York Jets. Aaron Glenn can be a good head coach and this victory proves why. He never gave up and never let the team give up. Glenn is literally going all in, refusing to punt or kick field goals or extra points when most other coaches would. He keeps fighting and asking his team to fight for every extra inch and point possible. This is a solid recipe for building a winning culture. It’s what Detroit has done.

This was Glenn’s first win as a head coach and that alone is something to build off of. His team is designed to win with defense and a strong running game, in no small part due to the fact that Fields is not a great passer. New York may have given up 38 points, but they only gave up 7 in the fourth quarter and held the Bengals when it mattered most. The Jets offense kept exploiting its opponent’s weakness, no matter the score, and it worked. Run, run and run some more. Glenn proved he can win the way he designed it.
The reality is that these Jets are a poor football team, dysfunctional amid an obvious reset season. But the big picture is getting brighter with every success Glenn finds. His Jets lost five games by one score or less and finally that stat has begun to even out. It usually does by the end of a season. At least three of their remaining opponents have bad defenses, but another two might as well. Perhaps the one score games do truly even out for this team, but at the very least, winning one or two more games will help the locker room and Glenn have something to hang their hat on. It ain’t much, but it’s honest work.

2. Why do the football gods forsake the New York Giants?
Todd Salem: The rematch with Philadelphia was a semi-blowout. The Giants couldn’t hang with the Eagles despite the absence of Philly’s best pass-catcher, A.J. Brown. The reason is New York suffered far more from injuries than Philadelphia did.
Before the game even began, NY was decimated in the secondary. After the start, it got worse. New York had pretty much an entire backup unit in the defensive secondary. Jalen Hurts picked them apart all day, and when the defense tried to compensate, Saquon Barkley and company ran through huge holes.
On top of the defense being short-handed, the offense took the larger blow when Cam Skattebo went down with a dislocated ankle. Jaxson Dart and the entire NY team knew what it had lost immediately after the play. Skattebo will be out for the rest of the season. The question then becomes can his infectious personality and persona survive on the sidelines to continue to help the club.

From an x’s and o’s perspective, losing a running back would be one of the easiest injuries for this Giants club to overcome. They still have Tyrone Tracy, a very good runner and receiver, as well as veteran Devin Singletary. However, as we saw both before and after Skattebo took over as the lead back, the young rookie was running differently. Can Tracy and Singletary capture any of that?
The rest of the locker room also galvanized around Skattebo (and Dart) as the emotional leaders of the team despite being in their first seasons. How does that materialize once Skattebo can no longer help them on the field? It’s an interesting question. I’m pessimistic that he can have the same rallying impact.

It’s been one blow after another for this team in 2025. The season feels snake-bitten. And yet, if NY comes out of ’25 with a franchise quarterback, everything else is gravy. They just need to remain healthy enough to let Dart learn and improve week after week. Can we at least have that??
Dan Salem: The season isn’t snake-bitten, but the Giants certainly lack much depth. That is the product of an average GM who has drafted fairly well, but not done much in free agency to help this team. It’s the reason we are avoiding the true question. Who will still be employed by the Giants after this season?
With each new injury, coach Daboll gets another excuse for the losses his team is building up. Dart looks very good so far, which was the primary task he set for himself in a prove-it year. New York was not good enough to compete for the playoffs, but his team had to improve and Daboll doubled down on what he does best, develop quarterbacks. So far so good.

Barring a major regression from Dart, which truly feels unlikely, I foresee Daboll keeping his job. But I’m not so sure we can say the same for anyone else, especially the GM. New York is not known for making changes often and like I said, the drafting has been pretty solid. But each injury exposes how little depth the Giants have, or a plan B for that matter. Russell Wilson to Dart was plan A, but now what? Was this season simply never meant to be anything more than plan A?
