They are the ONLY winless team, but are the New York Jets truly worst in the NFL? Plus, the New York Giants have a Dart problem that will only get worse.

My how next to nothing has changed, even if everything looks different. This is our New York football hour for NFL week 6 and both the New York Jets and Giants are pathetic. One may be the worst in the sport, while the other has a gaping hole on offense.

We are faced with the truth that none of us want to accept. The only way through is through, so let’s feel everything and bite the proverbial bullets. Literally everyone is asking, outsiders are laughing or averting their eyes, but someone must step up to the podium and fire back. Tough questions require hard answers.
New York Jets and Giants: NFL Week 6

1. Are the New York Jets the worst team in the league?
Todd Salem: It’s time to get right down to it. After five games, the New York Jets have shown little on either side of the ball. They are 0-5, with a -45 point differential. The defense has been an unmitigated disaster under Aaron Glenn and Steve Wilks. On offense, we have seen some nice things in previous weeks, especially in the running game. Week 5 against Dallas was supposed to be a culmination.
The Cowboys had the worst defense in the sport through a month of the season, yet against the Jets, they turned into the Purple People Eaters. There were a few huge Breece Hall runs, but that’s about it up until garbage time. The NY o-line gave up a whopping 14 QB hits and five sacks.
We know everything is bad right now…but is it worse than everyone else? There are other contenders for worst team in the league: the Saints, Titans, Browns, and Raiders could all make claims.

Despite winning this past week, the answer might still be Tennessee, who only won a game thanks to monumental boners by the Cardinals. The Titans have what is shaping up to be the worst offense in the league and a bad defense to boot, as well as a suspect head coach who has proven nothing and a rookie quarterback still trying to find his sea legs.
Maybe the Jets have all those things as well, without the benefit of a rookie QB to build around. So the future could be considered worse, but I think the current roster is better. So they have that going for them at least, which is nice.
Dan Salem: I don’t think so, but in another two weeks we might be saying yes. It’s nearly impossible to win when your team’s defense can’t stop a fly, so the Jets are always playing from behind. This defense seems to be getting worse week by week, and opposite to last season, the offense can only do so much. Eventually it breaks and against Dallas the offense certainly stalled.

New York can run the ball well, but we knew that going into the season. The problem is that teams can only rely on their running game if they are ahead or the score is close. With a defense this bad, the Jets are being forced to throw often. Justin Fields is being forced to play into his weakness, as opposed to his strengths. Unless the defense hits bottom and starts to improve at least marginally, New York is not going to win, barring their opponent making a lot of turnovers. The Jets are not causing any, so it will be ineptitude by the opposition that leads to a win.
This team is built to win on the back of decent defense, but it has a historically bad one right now. That makes them the worst team in the league, for September at least. We know September football tells lies, but it’s very difficult to picture this team as anything but exactly as advertised.

2. Do the New York Giants need to trade for a wide receiver?
Todd Salem: The Week 5 loss to New Orleans can be summed up rather succinctly: the Giants lost the turnover battle 5-0. Despite the poor outcome, I continue to be inspired by Jaxson Dart’s play. He just needs more help to flourish. However, balancing that sentiment is the fact that the Giants aren’t going anywhere this season. So, the question becomes should the team spend assets to acquire a pass catcher?
If the front office has resigned itself to 2025 being a rebuilding season, they would surely be hard-pressed to spend significant draft capital on adding a veteran wide receiver. That would be a net loss for a team looking ahead to 2026.

However, there must be some level of value gained by helping out Dart during his maturation at the QB position. Right now, the WR room is one of the weakest in the sport. The team ran a lot of two tight-end sets this past Sunday. Daniel Bellinger is fine; Theo Johnson is an upside, project-type player. This isn’t a case of KC running the offense through Travis Kelce in years past.
At running back, once Tyrone Tracy returns, the Giants have three useful backs. And Tracy was a former collegiate WR, adding to his value in this circumstance. And yet, none of that is really enough to help a QB make plays and succeed. I am of the opinion that the Giants should indeed trade for a receiver for this season. I know it may not be the savviest move, but there is value to be gained from a development standpoint.

I don’t know who that player would be. Guys like DJ Moore and Jacobi Meyers, among others, seem to be nebulously available, but who knows what a trade would actually look like. The point is, the NY brass should find out and be willing to sacrifice some of the future for what it is currently trying to cultivate.
Dan Salem: I asked this question last week on our 3 man Booth podcast, because it’s nearly impossible for Dart to develop and succeed without a receiving threat. Wandall Robinson is not and can not be a number one receiver, yet here we are. Tight ends are great and all. Running backs are great and all. But if your team has no receivers of note, then defenses can stack the box and blitz at will. Dart will be lucky to survive the month under these conditions.
We have ample examples of very good quarterbacks making their receivers into great weapons and seemingly great players. But we have zero examples of a rookie quarterback doing this, because he simply does not have the experience to lean on. Rookies who have done really well, like Jayden Daniels last season, have deep threats. The Giants need somebody, because Nabers is not coming back this year.

I don’t care what it costs, but New York must add a veteran receiver of quality. Neglecting to do so means Dart is handicapped permanently for the rest of the season. His development is the key to the Giants future and its coaches’ jobs. I don’t’ see how this goes well if the team lacks an offensive number one.
