Over a lifetime of eating adventures, I have found that sometimes the very best meals are created in divey little hole-in-the-wall restaurants, on food trucks, and, in the case of take-away breakfast spot, Another Kind of Sunrise, out of little food shacks not much bigger than a lemonade stand.
If you didn’t know what to look for, you could easily miss the chalk board sign detailing the delectable, freshly made cereals that are served out of a café style breakfast bar in a quaint alleyway just steps down from the Tasting Kitchen on Abbot Kinney Blvd. Luckily, I had been informed of the healthy deliciousness that awaited me there, so I enlisted a fellow foodie and we trekked out in the hopes of finding a new addition to our list of favorite breakfast spots, and Another Kind of Sunrise found itself another addict.
Despite the menu being relatively simple, with a few different types of cereals that are freshly made of the finest, organic ingredients along with teas, coffees, and juices, I struggled to decide between a few of the options because each one sounded so intriguingly enticing. I settled on Fafurina’s Paleo Granola, which is a gluten free blend of almonds, pumpkin seeds, pecans, shredded coconut, honey, and maple syrup with freshly made almond milk. For those of you reading this and thinking that my breakfast choice sounds like rabbit food, let me tell you this: I grew up in the South, which means that eating heartily is in my blood, and when I finished the last spoonful of the crunchy, grain-free, savory-sweet goodness, I was very full. However, if your appetite is truly monstrous, you can always load your bowl up with extra toppings like fresh fruit, cacao nibs, and nuts and wash it all down with fresh cold-pressed juices courtesy of Moon Juice, truly exquisite teas courtesy of Distira Tisanes, or a cup of coffee courtesy of Handsome Coffee Roasters.
While there is no traditional seating, the barista told us that people often sit on the bench-sized ledges of
the planters that line the alleyway as he handed us our bowls, so we followed his instructions and plopped ourselves down directly across from a mesmerizing, black-and-white sunrise mural courtesy of Diana Garcia and Brandon Boyd (yes, the Brandon Boyd of Incubus). As we sat munching on our artisan cereals, enjoying the sleepy morning ambiance of the alleyway and some mellow tunes being broadcast from an unseen speaker, I knew that this would be the first of many mornings basking in the scrumptiousness of Another Kind of Sunrise.
