An excellent film which is as dark as it is light, The Brutalist takes no prisoners. Cynical is not a strong enough word, but neither is beautiful. This movie is all of it.
The Brutalist is brutal, cynical, and a beautiful mess. It’s an excellent movie that is basically two films split up by an intermission. I took the intermission and loved this journey, all though its disturbing and uplifting and uncomfortable. You learn at the end who is telling the tale, which makes it all the more satisfying.

Adrien Brody is exceptional and deserves an Oscar for his performance in The Brutalist. But his journey would be all happy sunshine, if not for those other people in his character’s life. Escaping to America may have been the only option, but it was not an easy choice nor an easier path to walk. Everything light has its hidden darkness and vice versa, which is exactly what the brutalist architecture represents and why its so perfect for this film’s theme. The movie is broken in half, with two ten year journeys through parts of life. Prepare yourself.
