New York Jets and Giants: NFL Week 1

1. Will Aaron Glenn be a good coach?
Todd Salem: I say we may not find out answers to some of these questions for months, but the most important question for the Jets franchise may not be answered for years.
Glenn comes over from Detroit as a first-time head coach. He was in charge of the Lions defense, one that succumbed to many injuries but was not a stellar group. However, everyone loves Glenn’s personality and leadership. Will that translate to leading both sides of the ball?
Also on BuzzChomp: Who WILL BE the First Backup QB to start?
I don’t have a clear read on this one. There was not much offseason noise surrounding Glenn, which is probably a good thing. An exception to the normal rule, when it comes to NFL teams, all news not pertaining to the product on the field is bad news. So a quiet locker room is a positive. Can Glenn run a full team, especially an offense, though? We have no evidence either direction at this point. Do you have a hunch?
Dan Salem: My hunch is that yes, Glenn is and will be a good head coach for the New York Jets. His tenure feels completely different than every other one over the past decade. Glenn has been nearly silent in the media and the entire team has followed suit. He is a former player who has come home, coaching his “dream” team a la Rex Ryan.
Glenn has shaped the team into a run first, defensive minded football team. This has been the ONLY way the Jets have ever won anything in the last twenty years. It also happens to suit New York’s strengths at the moment. Something feels different around the team and it’s not just the new car smell.
2. Will the New York Jets defense return to form?
Todd Salem: This is a piggyback question. Under Robert Saleh, the Jets had one of the preeminent defenses in the entire sport. Since his departure, the group has taken a major step back despite retaining many of the same players across all three levels. Can Glenn and Steve Wilks get this team back to those heights?
My read is yes. Between the pass rushers, the Q’s, and mixing in the Sauce, the players are too good to be anything less than a league-average unit by default. Good coaching should get them much higher than that.

Dan Salem: I agree, the talent across the Jets’ defense is superb and this unit was stellar before Saleh got fired. By all appearances, Glenn is mainly focused on letting his players do what they do best. This is great news for a defense that has shown it can dominate. Ranking in the top 15 as a unit feels highly likely for the Jets this season.

3. Will Breece Hall lead the Jets backfield in touches by the end of the season?
Todd Salem: Hall was thought of as one of the best backs in the league after his second season, which was his first full season. Then, last year, he disappointed. His yards per carry went down, as did his targets in the passing game, and production overall.
Now, Hall is still the starter, but Braelon Allen is a fantasy darling and breathing down his neck for playing time. Do you think Hall hangs on to lead the Jets backfield all season?

If I had to guess, I say Hall hangs onto the starting role, even if Allen garners more of a timeshare. Hall has proven himself in this league if the offense around him isn’t complete dogsh*t. He has big-play ability, as well as skills as a pass catcher. Let’s get a good offensive line in front of him and see what transpires before anointing Allen as the next guy up.
Dan Salem: This is a contract year for Hall and he enters fully healthy with an offense designed to help him succeed. I expect him to retain the starting job all year and return to his dominant form. Now, this does not necessarily mean he has the most touches, because he could be the big play guy, while Allen is the bruiser behind him.
Justin Fields at QB also likes to run, so there is plenty of room for the ball to get spread around the offense. But this only helps Hall, who will have attention moved away from him, allowing him to catch defenses off guard. I don’t know how good the Jets offense can actually be, but Hall is going to have a very good season.
4. Will Jaxson Dart start a game before November 1?
Todd Salem: Dart has looked good during the preseason, but it’s only preseason. Russell Wilson is the starter and has the big arm and the downfield eye that could lead this team to a legit offense. But he hasn’t been good in years and sets teams back with his mistakes in the pocket.
The start of November would be Week 9 of the season. Is that enough time for Dart to sit and learn? Is that enough time for Wilson to play and fail? New York also has the toughest schedule in the league. Based on projected opponents, through eight weeks, this team will probably be 2-6 at best? It’s an ugly slate.
Also on BuzzChomp: Alien Earth DELIVERS with New Sci-fi Super Heroes
Even still, I think that is too early for a project rookie with big holes in his game to be thrown into the mix. The schedule hardly lightens up after that, so there isn’t a soft landing. Dart will see the field in 2025 but will not start by Week 9.
Dan Salem: Unequivocally YES, Dart will start before November 1st. Wilson has 4-6 solid weeks in him before age starts wearing down his ability to be at his best. But more importantly, the Giants and Coach Daboll have about two months before its time to prove Dart is the future and they are the coaching staff to be there holding his proverbial hand.
Barring a torrid start of four or five wins in September and early October, there is no reason for the Giants to wait on Dart. His ability to be this team’s starting QB is the ONLY thing saving his coaches jobs after the year. Giving him two full months to develop on the field as the starter feels right to me.
5. Will Brian Daboll be the Giants head coach Week 1 of 2026?
Todd Salem: Nope.
We already discussed the schedule. Even if there are improvements, this team is going to be bad again this season. Probably the worst thing Daboll could do for his security is bail on Wilson and turn to Dart too soon. If the rookie struggles, that guarantees Daboll’s demise. If he never turns to Dart at all, that might tell ownership that he doesn’t believe in the kid and there’d be no reason to continue with this regime. It is a very fine line, and everything is stacked against him.
Dan Salem: Man I really want to say yes, but there is only one real scenario where he keeps his job. New York MUST win at least six games this season and Dart MUST show he can be the team’s QB of the future.

I have a good feeling about Dart, but that all gets wiped out if Daboll gets fired. Two offenses in two years usually dooms a young QB, especially when the entire coaching staff is changed. Daboll picked Dart and they will sink or swim together. The most likely outcome is that Dart looks good over six or more games, but the Giants only win four games all season and that is enough to clean house.
