Proper gym hygiene is often overlooked, but thanks to Cass Telford you can now keep it clean. She’s put together the ultimate guide for you, making sure your health and fitness journey is a safe and clean one.

According to a 2014 study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), gym equipment tend to be covered in all sorts of harmful microorganisms that can cause various health conditions such as skin infections, pneumonia, food poisoning and even toxic shock syndrome.

Of course, if you enjoy doing full-body workouts, your chances of getting sick are significantly higher because they require you to come into contact with more potentially contaminated pieces of equipment and surfaces. The good news, however, is that you can easily address this issue by simply practicing proper gym hygiene.

Wipe it down

Ever notice how a lot of gyms nowadays provide disinfectant sprays or wipes? Well, that’s because according to the experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), keeping surfaces dirt-free and disinfected is a great way to keep diseases from spreading. It doesn’t even matter if you’re working out at an actual fitness center or at home. You always need to clean and sanitize gym equipment before and after you use them because they are constantly exposed to sweat and dirt, making them the perfect breeding ground for all sorts of disease-causing microorganisms.

Lay down that towel

To further lessen your risk of getting infected or spreading an infection, try using a workout towel to cover any piece of gear that you have to lie down or sit on. This allows you to completely eliminate any form of physical contact with potentially contaminated surfaces. Just be sure to not only keep track of the side that touches your skin, but also use a separate towel to wipe the sweat off your body.

Wash your hands

We all know that proper and regular hand washing is another great way to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Well, this becomes even more important in a gym where pretty much everything is shared between hundreds of sweaty—and sometimes sick—individuals every single day. You wouldn’t want to catch something that forces you to miss gym days and slow your progress down, would you?

Keep things clean, keep making progress

Always keep your workout spaces as clean as possible to minimize your risk of contracting and spreading infections. Keep in mind that fitness is a game of consistency. This means that the longer you can keep working out without getting sick, the more progress you can make.
