The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Ep 9 ‘heroic’ highlights are all about June’s revenge and redemption. Let’s face it, June’s constantly doing stupid things and she’s been taking risks that would get anyone else killed. It’s all explained here, with the gory details of her hospital torture.
This entire episode takes place in the hospital, after Ofmatthew gets shot. Ofmatthew is on life support, but they are only trying to save the baby. June has to stay with Ofmatthew until the baby comes because “it’s her shopping partner,” but really it’s her punishment for the way she treated her. June’s already been at the hospital for over 30 days by the time we see her. She is losing it. Whoa!

June is emotionally and physically tested in this episode and pretty much goes crazy, but anyone would crack. The ironic part is that Aunt Lydia, Serena, and the other higher ups don’t see anything wrong with this type of punishment. Serena says to her that she’s supposed to be one of “the strong ones.” Anyone would go crazy in June’s situation!
The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 ep 9 definitely shows us how far June has changed this season. Suicidal thoughts anyone! In the beginning of the season she can’t leave Hannah in Gilead and it’s completely understandable, but then she gets too singular focused. It takes Of Matthew’s situation, Janine, Serena, the Doctor, and this whole crazy experience for her to realize that she was thinking too small and being selfish.
June’s realization that she was wrong and that the right thing to do was being there for Ofmatthew, causes her redemption. She got her revenge, then finds her true purpose. I think that June’s purpose will be where the rest of this season now goes!
