Staying Focused! My Running Diary

It’s easy to lose focus on running with so many other things going on in life. It’s something I’ve worked really hard on, because my run is important and having focus keeps it that way.

Staying focused on running is something I’m constantly working on. It’s no secret that I love to run, but even my love of running isn’t enough sometimes to give focus. By making sure that I keep my running in its own place, I’ve been able to maintain focus. It has a permanent position in my life and won’t let me forget it.

This is why I run in the mornings. It’s a fixture in my life, the first thing I do every day. The more I do it, the more focused I am on running each and every day. I don’t feel like myself without a run, so even when I’m tired in the morning, I still make sure I get up and go. I give myself the time to do it! I go to bed at night with the intention of going for a run in the morning. I always set myself up to accomplish something before I’ve even had breakfast! How great is that?

I’ve said it before, but it’s definitely worth repeating: running is something I do for me. I don’t run for my speed. I don’t run for the distance. I run because I love the way it makes me feel and I love it as my primary form of exercise. I love that I can do it anywhere. Really the only time I can’t is if it’s raining hard, snowing, or super cold outside. Since I live in Los Angeles, I rarely have to worry about that. Learning to run for yourself is the key to focus.

If you’re someone who craves the race atmosphere and it makes you feel alive, then that’s a perfect way of running for you. If you’re like me and don’t need to train for a race, preferring to train for yourself, then that’s perfect too. If you fall in between, then remind yourself that we as a species have been running since we learned to walk! It’s something all of our ancestors have done and all of our future generations will do. All cultures run!

I love the solitude of running. I love that it’s just me and whatever my route is. It’s extremely freeing. I used to feel the same way about running on the treadmill, but once I truly discovered the peacefulness of running outside, there was no comparison. Its my time by myself. That really keeps me focused. I don’t ever want to lose that part of the day that’s just for me. Often times we put so much other stuff ahead of ourselves and what we need. Stay focused and keep running first.

Focus is definitely something you need to own. You need to hold onto it and remind yourself why you run. There would be a void inside me if I didn’t run and it is a void that I don’t want to live with! Even though my life tries to steal my focus at times, I remind myself that I have 40 minutes to an hour to give to myself each day. Its time just for me! Remind yourself of that, give yourself that time, and focus on running.
