“They said what?” – Sports quote Game (rnd 4)

Seesaw Sports, where Dan Salem and Todd Salem throw down on the NFL, MLB, NBA and more. Two brothers from New York yell, scream and debate sports.

June brings us round four of They said what?

The rules at Seesaw Sports are as follows: Player one presents player two with a sports quote.

– The quote can be about sports
– Can be said by a famous sportsman
Can be both about sports and said by a famous sportsman, but NEVER neither one

The quote is given, along with three hints as to who said it. These hints can be anything from when the quote was uttered to facts about the speaker.

Player two then responds with their guess as to who said it and a brief explanation surrounding their conclusion. A correct guess is worth one point for player two. An incorrect guess is worth one point for player one.

The score after three rounds: Todd – 4 points and Dan – 2 points

DAN:

I’m getting round four started with a fast ball baby. You may be up by two points, but much like the Los Angeles Kings, its far from over between us.

“Playing polo is like trying to play golf during an earthquake.”

Hint one: This individual never played polo or golf professionally.

Hint two: The individual burst onto the scene in the late 1970’s.

Hint three: This individual was caught using steroids and/or performance enhancers.

TODD:

Wow, starting off the week with a toughie. And you threw in hint three as either a life preserver for me or a complete trick as many of the “known” users in professional sports were never technically caught. I don’t even know where to begin.

Thanks for informing me that this person never played professional polo; that helps loads.

Hint two may be my saving grace. That throws out alternative options like Lance Armstrong or Marion Jones. It also throws out nearly everyone from basketball or football as no one from that era in those sports was ever caught or tested for PEDs. The sports just didn’t care (as they still don’t!). It might be a former Olympic athlete, but I don’t have one in mind.

Which brings me to baseball. My first inclination is to say Mark McGwire or Jose Canseco. They both started in the 80s, perhaps the late 1970s. They both were steroid users, although I’m not sure either one was technically caught. Canseco admitted to using himself if I remember correctly, and McGwire was nailed on circumstantial evidence, never failing a test. However, I don’t have another avenue to go here.

Since McGwire was not a talker, my final answer here is Jose Canseco. Although I am anything but confident as Canseco may not have cracked the major leagues until the 1980s, and he isn’t known for saying clever blurbs like the above quote.

DAN:

Your logic was excellent, but your answer incorrect. Point for me!

Sylvester Stallone is the famous man who uttered those words. He burst onto the scene in mid to late 70’s as a professional boxer in the movie ‘Rocky.’ He was exposed in the 90s and the 2000s for steroid use. No one cared, he was simply preparing for a film role or two. But Sly was definitely a juicer.

I’m preparing myself for what will certainly be a challenging rebuttal.

TODD:

Gahh, I should have reviewed the rules to the game! My own misstep, I forgot a quote could be said by a sportsman OR be about sports. My narrow vision steered me down a mistaken path.

Score after 4.1 rounds:
Todd – 4 points
Dan – 3 points
