For a long time I thought I needed to run a minimum of 4.5 miles to get my daily running fix. I was being so silly acting like this! Embrace the short run, one of our many great running tips.
Diary of a Running Chick: November 20th, 2017
Mindset can make or break you, so I’m constantly working on my own. Often I have the mindset that because I run daily, I should be running over 4 miles a day. The mileage doesn’t matter! I used to wake up super early when I “needed” more time to run. But its the journey, not the destination. Having a baby has made me a lot more flexible with how far I run, which is great! I’ve learned to embrace the short run and you should too. Sometimes it is much easier to just go out and run for thirty to forty minutes. That’s it. No strings attached. Embrace those amazing, short runs. It’s another of our great running tips.
My short runs are of course variations on my longer runs. This allows me to use the time I have available that day. You need to already know what your short run will be. When you’re setting yourself up for success, this is one of the great running tips. I know I can get lost in my runs. You want to make sure you know at which point you’re going to turn around or veer off, in order to make your run shorter.
I always to plan to embrace a short run the night before if possible. Since we know our what our schedule will be, we can adapt and get excited for this opportunity. Often it’s been a decision I’ve made when I’ve woken up to feed my baby, so if you need to sleep later, embrace a short run! Learning how to embrace all lengths of a run is such a great running tip. Consistency is key when it comes to running. I love running every day, but I don’t have to be so strict on my mileage numbers.
Our running tips are always about setting yourself up for success. This is critical when you’re running. You want to have that fire inside of you to go run, and you want to have fun. Embracing that short run really lets you do that. It also lets me just go and run and not think about anything. Previously I would go to the gym or skip all together on those days. Now there is no reason why I need to skip my daily exercise.
Being able to embrace the short run adds to the different dynamics of your weekly fitness schedule. Doing the same thing over and over is definitely insanity. You can’t sustain a running habit doing that and you will definitely get bored. You will also stop seeing the benefits of your exercise, as your body gets used to the monotonous activity. We’ve recommended before to embrace variety in your runs and this running tip is doing just that!
I love running and having a life long running career takes work! I know I need all of the running tips I can get, so that I will be one of those 90 year old grandmas out for my morning run. Who cares if I’m running slow. I’ll be having fun and that comes from embracing the short run! It’s not always about miles. Sometimes it’s just about getting out there for a run!
